Long Beard - Means To Me
88

Had this cd for a few weeks, and my GF isn't here, so since I have my place to myself, I tossed this on...Beautiful record. Dream pop with ambient, reverb laden guitar. Leslie Bear not only makes delicate music, her voice is comforting and pretty. I like this a lot. Reminds me of Hazel English's 1st record, a fave of mine. I am, and have always been a sucker for delicate girl singers. Still am. Love this record! Plus she's so freaking adorable.

Bark Psychosis - Hex
99

I remember buying this record when it came out. Had no idea what it was going to sound like, but at the record store that I shopped at weekly, it was suggested. Id usually pick up 5-10 new records a week, so I was always up on music. Still am. Still into physical copies, I never listen to music digitally. Sadly, most indie record stores dipped thanks to Amazon. :(

So let's talk about this perfect record. I'd usually fall asleep to this record, not because it was boring, just because it was so ... read more

Louis Tomlinson - Faith in the Future
NR

I haven't listened to this full record yet, but I'll give it a proper review when I do. But Goddaamn if that Silver Tongues isn't one of the best songs of 2022. I'm dead serious.

Gil Scott-Heron - Free Will
89

Gil Scott-Heron is a massively influential artist and innovator, yet not enough people know who he is.. This dude is a singer, poet, activist, etc. He is best know for his song/poem The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.
When civil rights were at their all time high in the 60s and 70s, he was there in the forefront educating his brothers and sisters. He told it like it was, even if it made you uncomfortable, not a drop of Uncle Tom blood in this cat.
So this may not be his most well known ... read more

Markus Guentner - In Moll

I've listened to this record so many times that it feels like it was made only for me. The German label(Kompakt) which put out this record, is known for many music styles e.g. techno, ambient, minimal techno, tech house, etc. On occasion, they will put out a track with a vocal.. This falls under the ambient side of the brilliant label, Kompakt. First off, please Kompakt, reissue this. Please. If you do, I'll buy another copy.
So on to the music. Sounds like nothing else that I've ever ... read more

Owen - The Avalanche

I thought that I had this record, but I couldnt find it, so I have been listening to it online lately.. i keep thinking that I need to buy this record since I own all of his stuff except this one. But hey! I just found it today. I opened it up and threw it on. I knew(I thought) that I owned this.

Upon listening, this guy just kills it. His music is so beautiful and gentle. His singing is lovely and beautifully distant. He'll throw some violin and piano in a song against his guitar, and it ... read more

Future Islands - Singles
90

These guys. These fucking guys. I love this record. It's a synth pop band, but not some cheesy 80s bunk. The singer just kills it. Just watch them play Seasons on Letterman and be amazed at how great the singer is. Eccentric? Yes. Brilliant? For sure. Love.

The National - High Violet
92

The National are obviously a great band, there's no argument there. So let's talk about this gem. It's their 4th or 5th record, I cant remember....
Their layered sound is just addictive. The production is great and wonderfully nuanced. Matt Beringer's baritone is comforting like a bedtime story during a thunderstorm. His baritone is more Justin Vernon(Bon Iver-who also guests on this record by the way), and less Nick Cave.
With a majestic, swelling opener like Terrible Love, you can't go ... read more

The Beatles - Abbey Road

My son Slumber wrote a review of his favorite record, Abbey Road, so I'll follow suit and try to keep my composure. I won't be able to. This will be a long one, and less about the record review, and more about life. I apologize in advance if this review is self indulgent.

I'm a huge electronic music aficionado. It's in my soul. Being from Detroit(sorry guys, we invented techno music 😀), and living in record store my whole life, I've heard it all. I can sit here for days and talk about techno, house, electto, IDM, deep House, etc . I can tell you the best records of any of these genres to buy, who my favorite artists are. It's my thing. Ok, no more bragging:) let's get to the record!

So Mattew Herbert is known for his genius sampling of anything. Dude will ... read more

John Coltrane - Om
85

Possibly the craziest record ever to walk the earth. Most people know Coltrane for records like Giant Steps, Blue Train and the godlike record, A Love Supreme. This one is so far off that vibe, that most people can't listen to more than a few minutes of it. I challenge you. Listen to this whole record front to back. It's out of this world. He was definitely spiritually on to something, but whether that's good or bad, is up to you. Ommmmm. Ommmmm!

Makoto Matsushita - First Light
100

This record. This freaking record. It's not often that I go into a music store and ask what is playing like I used to. Mostly because I have every damn thing in the world haha. And if I don't, I certainly know of it. Well I'm father's day, I took a quick little run into the Rock Shop in Plymouth meeting. And they were playing this record. I'm pretty familiar with Steely dan, and I asked the guy if this was Steely dan, which I thought was weird because I've never heard it before. He said " ... read more

Fred Thomas - Sink Like a Symphony
90

Fred Thomas, a prolific songwriter from Michigan, with an encyclopedic knowledge of music, comes through hard for me on this record. He is all about feeling and emotion and songwriting, and less about perfect production. Perfect production is massively overrated, look what happened to modern radio with digital compression, auto-tune and all that bullshit. Anybody that can't sing or right music can make a record sound ready for The radio. Who cares? Anybody can also sit there and make a record ... read more

Daniel Johnston - The Late Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered Covered
85

Hi. How are you? Lets start the review. So for me personally, I tend to like the lo-fi sounds more than the polished ones. I'd rather listen to the Beatles demos than their real records. Sue me. I find that it's harder to get sick of less polished music. When things are horribly mixed, its like a puzzle to me, as in, "hey, lets find the melody under this mucky noise. Yay. I did it". So off to Daniel Johnston, king of outsider music.
Man I remember his cassettes. I remember when you ... read more

Nick Drake - Bryter Layter
95

Ah. Nick Rodney Drake. His songs were the soundtrack to my 20s. I don't remember why, but I think because I read about him being an unknown sad folk figure that commited suicide, I blindly bought his box set with all his music packaged in like a Christmas present, waiting for me to open it. I knew that Pink Moon was his last record, and if it wasn't purposely his suicide note, it sure sounded like it. I loved it. Played it hundreds of times, which didn't leave me any time to listen to his ... read more

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Darklands
92

One of my favorite bands of all time. A Scottish duo with a penchant to juxtapose noise and pop in the same second. They love their catchy Beach Boys-ish melodies, but they also like to create walls of noise.

Coming off their first highly influential record Psychocandy, they toned down the noise and opted for a poppier sound. And goddammit did they succeed ten fold! Darklands is a beautiful, lonely, dark(no pun intended), sad/happy masterpiece. April Skies is the same, but more upbeat. And ... read more

Popol Vuh - Einsjäger & Siebenjäger

These guys are from the school of German Krautrock of the early '70s. This record is a little bit different than their other stuff. They always switch it up though. Lots of long songs, vocals here and there. And at the risk of spelling the song title wrong, And since there's only a few songs on this record, it's one of the last songs with a girl singing. ....Okay I just looked it up It's the title song. It's about 20 minutes long and it's a bunch of drums and guitar jamming and later it gets ... read more

Kraftwerk - Trans-Europe Express

Kraftwerk. Machine men. Innovative, influential, life changing German group. Without Kraftwerk, electronic music would not be the same. Really. They are one of the first bands to use all electronic instruments. Synthesizers, drum machines, calculators. They invented techno. Especially Detroit techno. Yes they did. They were doing this in the early 70s, before Disco, before House, Techno, etc. I could use a bunch of superlatives to describe them and be here all day, but I'll get to reviewing ... read more

David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

Townes Van Zandt - The Nashville Sessions
NR

Towns Van Zandt. Tragic figure. Massively underrated
songwriter. Thankfully Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson brought some of his music to light. I chose this record to review as it's one of my favorites. But if I had the chance I would have reviewed Texas troubadour, which is a box set of all his studio records, Not including the music that he made in the '90s and 2000s, which were good, but nothing like his classic records on the Tomato label..
There's nothing I can say about him that hasn't ... read more

On snoozeybro's review of Taylor Swift - The Life of a Showgirl
"Nah. She just re-released singles with an acoustic version on the B side. No rereleases. I refuse to buy it because I know in a month there's going to be the anthology, so I'll wait for that. But God damn if Eldest Daughter isn't a great song."
On Snooze! - You Move, I Move
"@TornadoDog33 I think one of the biggest questions we need to ask ourselves regarding Christianity and God and all that stuff, is is there really free will? Not so much, as God already has everything planned in programmed. What I find really mind boggling, is that God is omniscient omnipotent, as in he's always there and he knows what's going to happen to everybody in their future. And he allegedly made all of us. So basically he made us flawed and he knows some of the people he made are going to go to hell, so it's almost putting these people through torture anyway, your verse was great, and so was Snooze's.. great messages and great for calling out corruption!"
On Snooze! - You Move, I Move
"@TornadoDog33 I personally don't find anything redeeming about the Bible personally. Yeah the Psalms have some nice messages and such, but aside from that, not a huge fan. Then you have the Christian crusades, but that still going on, just in different ways. And then it comes down to every religion has a God and every religion has a book, and every religion thinks that they are the right one. I think at the end of the day, if you can be a good person just to be a good person, without religion or anything, then you're doing okay. Then you have crazy stories in the Bible like Noah's ark. Obviously that never happened. The story was stolen from the book Epic of Gilgamesh."
On Snooze! - You Move, I Move
"@TornadoDog33 No, I got ya. Everybody can believe in something, obviously that's their right, and as long as they're not hurting anybody, it's not a problem. But when leaders as well as non-leaders, use Christianity as some sort of veil to cover up money laundering or killing or raping, or whatever, then that is some straight hypocritic shit.. I think the Bible's kooky. Too much rape, too much killing, too much hate. Even God orders killing in the bible. I don't know the exact number, but somebody actually went through the Bible and counted how many people God killed, and how many people Satan killed, and God killed like millions and Satan killed like 10. And 4 o those people, God let him kill, the Book of Job, you probably know this story"
On Snooze! - You Move, I Move
"Oh I get it. My only gripe of Christianity is it aligns itself with the bible. The Bible is full of rape and murder etc etc. So yes, as a whole, I think it's a pretty awful organization, but when you get to the Catholic church, that is as low as you can go. But we all know the history of it so..."
On NaShFort's review of Snooze! - You Move, I Move
"Oh, and it's amazing how somebody that doesn't know these people personally that have given snooze High ratings, yet they know for sure that they are only giving him high ratings to make him feel good lol. Yeah because this clowns of mind reader right? Lol. It's like me saying, yeah I know he gave Kendrick Lamar a high rating just so he'll feel better. Unbelievable"
On NaShFort's review of Snooze! - You Move, I Move
"Dude's a clown. I went to see his reviews and it's a bunch of who gives a fuck crap artists. Yeah he likes to pimp a butterfly, who doesn't though? Of course it's a good record. Little Reezy and all that other stuff is pretty awful, average, and arrogant. Hate that shit. Want to know how those artists can improve? By writing deep stuff that actually means something to somebody. That would be a good start. And I also think that it says a lot about somebody when their taste in music is myopic at best. I'm pretty sure the people that gave snooze good ratings will listen to his records more than once. That right there says that they were not lying about their High ratings."
On NaShFort's review of Snooze! - You Move, I Move
"@NaShfort so what did or didn't you like about the record that you gave it a 46 rating? And yeah, you're right. Nobody in the world can make good music unless they're popular. So if somebody isn't popular, they should just give up making music. And if you pick up a guitar for the first time in your life or you sing for the first time in your life, you should just give it up, because you aren't popular at that second. 😀 I saw a group called Animal Collective before they even had a record out. There were about 15 people in the audience including me. They weren't popular at all. I don't know why I bought all their records that they've been putting out for years lol"
On Snooze! - Wide Awake
"@lincoln and hey, I read all these reviews and comments, and I can't remember who said it, but somebody mentioned the beat doesn't flow with the song, that's absolutely not true. It's probably somebody that's not massively familiar with abstract rap or conscious rap or whatever the hell you want to call it. I mean we can make 4/4 boom bap, Kick Drum, bass drum, snare drum,808 drums with record scratching like Run DMC all day long, but it gets boring quick. I'd imagine the person that made that comment probably isn't familiar with much Hip Hop outside of the Sugarhill Gang and Run DMC and stuff like that. I enjoy it all, but I also enjoy abstract Jazzy complex rap. If you're a huge fan of hip hop, you got to know your history, and love it all"
On Snooze! - Wide Awake
"@lincoln Oh shit. Sweet. I'm glad my ear was on the money. I had a feeling I was right on both accounts, but I didn't want to sound too cocky like a know-it-all. And so you know, since I listen to all your guys's stuff and I'm very familiar with it, probably more than anybody, your production is getting light years better than eject you started out, that's not a diss, that's just saying, we all start out somewhere and grow. But yeah, great great production on this track."

On snoozeybro's review of Quadeca - I Didn't Mean to Haunt You
"@snoozeybro the only thing that ever steered me away from him, is the comedy stuff. I assumed since he was a "comedian", that he wouldn't be able to make serious music. You know, it's like Jim Carrey putting out a break up record or something. It wouldn't be taken seriously. But yeah, this dude was somehow able to pull it off"

On Snooze! - COME HOME SOON
"It's just a certain couple knob tweeks, and you'll get there. You will still sound abrasive and muddy, or whatever you're going for. Promise"
On Snooze! - COME HOME SOON
"Not at all. I don't mean clear. It's hard to explain. I really need to stop saying that because that's not what I mean. The same thing is I'm not a music producer, so I don't know how to explain it. What I do know is one of the most grimy records are fantastic damage and when you listen to it, you can hear the vocals and they are not clear but they are clear if that makes sense? And look, almost everybody loves your music who hears it. But every single person is trying to give you constructive criticism on the mixing. It's really a small thing, but it's a very important thing. I promise one day you guys will understand and you will realize you can mix but still sound experimental and abrasive and all that other shit."
On lincoln's review of Flashpapr - Flashpapr
"If I ever wanted to cry, it would be by listening to the song. It's fucking beautiful. I'd be curious if you only listen to the first minute or two of the song because the vocals don't come through till after a few minutes. Anyway, I think you should recheck it out"
On lincoln's review of Flashpapr - Flashpapr
"This song encompasses being young and in love. The way that it builds up with the violins, the lyrics, his delivery, this song encompasses what it's like to be young Take this lyric: " listening to the spinning wheels, you can't sell the way it feels to be in love". OR "Sweetheart, alphabet, don't forget how lucky we really are". " you are my best friend, you are the most beautiful thing, I keep inside my heart". I have probably played this song hundreds of times. That doesn't count the times where I grab my guitar and I just play and sing the whole song because it's comforting. You're a kid, maybe when you're older, you will realize how lucky it is to be young and experience love. I implore you to give this song another chance."
On lincoln's review of Flashpapr - Flashpapr
"@Lincoln with all due respect, I think you're very wrong on this one. Your rating is fine, that's not the problem, but I'll tell you what, I think one of the best songs that Fred route, was free rides on the bus. I honestly would stand by this song as one of the top five best songs that he ever wrote. Now granted, I saw him play with these guys a little over 20 years ago, and at that time, I was listening to a lot of innocent, melancholy music, so it was an easy sell. This song encompasses being young and in love. The way that it builds up with the violins, the lyrics, his delivery, I mean this song encompasses what it's like to be young and in love. I mean God. Take this lyric: " listening"
