Vinyl 1: Merriweather Post Pavilion │ Animal Collective
Merriweather Post Pavilion is an iconic album, whether for it's cover or just the sheer amount of enjoyment that it rewards everyone that hears it. Granted, it did take me a while to get into, but I don't regret getting into it at all. It is possibly one of the most dreamiest, atmospheric, and ravishing albums that I have heard to date. And I don't say that lightly. There's something entrancing and oddly aquatic about the whole thing; ... read more
There are many, many people who call Low Bowie's best album which I, admittedly, can barely see. Low of course is excellently catchy and has some great licks and such, but other than that, all of the Side A songs feel like skeletons and rough drafts of what Bowie would go on to do on "Heroes." "Heroes" tops this album in pretty much every regard.
Side B is almost mainly Ambient, yet these ambient songs feel begrudgingly out of place. You go from listening to 2-3 minute ... read more
Aside from "Heroes," this is by far Bowie's most underrated album. Criminally. He never really experimented that much from the '60s to the '80s, but if I had to pick his most experimental one, it would either be this or "Lodger." (I know Bowie's first album is by far his most experimental, but I don't even want to think about that album.)
Now, why do I like this album so much? Is it the experimentation? The fun, funk-esque, new wave-esque tracks? This "different" ... read more
Jeff Buckley is an unrecognized genius. sure, this album has a 4.06 overall rating and it is #110 overall as of writing this, but I feel like the average listener doesn't truly grasp just how genius this album truly is. even though this is literally his first album, it feels like it genuinely couldn't be any better. it feels complete, or dare I say perfect. hailing from a father with very deep singer-songwriter/experimental rock prowess, Jeff was basically born with the genres flowing through ... read more
Fleetwood Mac obviously have their own sound to their music. This uplifting, full and dare I say slightly jovial feeling is dashed basically all over all of their albums. It’s one of the main reasons they’re so popular, after all. Easy and uplifting listening is great and all, but I didn’t particularly enjoy this album, and I feel giving it a 3.0 is a little generous. There are songs that I enjoyed, mainly the hits “Dreams” and “The Chain,” but other ... read more
this is by far my favorite Ween album, favorite album in general, and what got me into psychedelic rock in the first place. it sucks that this isn't the most rated from Ween, because it is 100% where everyone should start out. it has the typical Ween goofs (also their best), but also some of their most serious and heartfelt shit, excluding "The Fucked Jam." because of this unusual mix of the two that Ween basically has never done before (aside from a song or two off of their past ... read more
seemingly dropping out of the blue, Sprain's "The Lamb as Effigy" is an album to marvel at. whether for it's somber piano sections, dissonance-injected guitar riffs, untraditional lyrics that often talk about erections for some reason, etc., everyone can find something to enjoy about this.
really I only have a few qualms about this album, being "Margin for Error" lasts for way too long, and feels directly ripped off from Swan's "Helpless Child," and "God, or ... read more
