Fabri Fibra - Mentre Los Angeles Brucia
40

Kraftwerk - Trans Europa Express
90

Note: This is a review for the German, original version of the album.

While I have been fascinated with the idea of Kraftwerk for a while, I somehow have never really engaged with their music until now, except a couple songs. 'Trans Europa Express', the band's sixth effort, was my entry, and boy, what an entry it is!
To best explain this record i'll say that there are basically two cycles: 'Europa Endlos' and 'Trans Europa Express'. These two songs are ... read more

Dinosaur Jr. - Without a Sound
90

You've seriously gotta be a mad man to think of this as a mediocre record. Sure, this is the first album of the infamous J/Mike Dinosaur Jr. duo, as Murph left, but by God what a great duo it is! J just confirms himself to be a great ass songwriter, perhaps even more so than the previous albums because this is more hard hitting and less abstract, and even though I didn't expect it, he's also a beast on the drums. And on the guitar, of course.
It's their best selling album, ... read more

Weezer - Weezer (Green Album)
70

Aren't you all a little mean to this little album? It's no Blue or Pinkerton, sure - what is? - but you'd be dumb to say this is that much of a downfall in quality. (My biggest fans will recognize this same introduction line from my Pablo Honey review...this album is pretty much that, except it's not their debut)
It's certainly way more positive than the previous two, and has Matt Sharp leave to do one more album with The Rentals, but in exchange you've got Mikey ... read more

Pulp - Different Class
90

Well, Common People and Disco 2000 are some of the masterpieces of the entire pop genre, let's get that out of the way - What's left?
A collection of 10 other great songs, I tell ya. While only occasionally reaching those highs, they never fall behind: from the opener 'Mis-Shapes', a rocky song about feeling left out from society, to the closer 'Bar Italia', a ballad about the aftermath of a drug-filled party, Pulp present us with a plethora of different styles of ... read more

Dinosaur Jr. - Green Mind
80

Here we enter the stage of the band where Lou Barlow leaves and what remains is essentially J Mascis' solo project: and if this doesn't demonstrate just how good of a musician J is, I don't know what does. Projects like these usually fall flat on their face, but on their fourth album Dinosaur Jr. keep going strong like they did on their previous, more "iconic" records, only stripping away some of the noise that characterized them. We have a series of great songs, no ... read more

CCCP Fedeli alla Linea - Socialismo e barbarie
70

Despite not being as directly memorable or punchy as the previous 'Affinità-divergenze', Socialismo e barbarie is anything but mediocre, despite having the worst album cover in CCCP's discography. It's the most politically charged record of the band, as we can immediately see from the opening track 'A ja ljublju SSSR' ("And I love the USSR", from a transliterated Russian) which features the USSR anthem as its intro before it was rendered ... read more

Self - Gizmodgery
100

This is probably the closest thing you can get to Odelay that isn't by mr. Hansen himself. The record was supposedly entirely made out of toy instruments, though this is barely noticeable if you don't know, because it also works as a great geek rock album in general.
The only word I can describe with is 'fun'. I had an incredibly fun time listening to it, especially 'Dead Man', which is my favorite on here. I can't name a lot of other highlights though, ... read more

Pretty Girls Make Graves - The New Romance
80

It sounds an awful lot like Sleater-Kinney, but that's not a bad thing. It's also not the most hard hitting thing in the world, but it does its job right without ever becoming mediocre. The 20th Anniversary Edition is my recommended edition because it adds two gorgeous, essential tracks, 'C-30 C-60 C-90 Go!' and 'Magic Lights', which would be my favorite on the record if included in the original version.

Neffa - Canerandagio - Parte 1
70

Klimt 1918 - Dopoguerra
50

Well, this just wasn't for me. I am always excited for Italian alt rock, and I remained excited while hearing the epic intro of this album, but it all fell flat pretty soon.
In truth, while I do understand the appeal and believe the instrumental side of this record is pretty solid, for me it only works as a sleeping aid. A lot of people make the comparison to U2, but it's more of the boring side of U2 that came around from the late 80s onward that shows up here, so don't expect ... read more

Bluvertigo - Zero
100

After listening to their third album, it is clear to me just how great Bluvertigo's discography is. Album after album, they elevated their level, slowly incorporating more electronic influences that culminated onto this project.

"Zero, ovvero la famosa nevicata dell'85" (Zero, or the famous snowfall of '85) fully shows Morgan's love for David Bowie, and here in particular his Berlin era from 1977 to 1979. Not only is there a great cover of 'Always Crashing in ... read more

i cani - Il sorprendente album d'esordio de I Cani
60

Riguardo quest'ultima parte: ... read more

Bluvertigo - Acidi e basi
80

I pezzi in ... read more

Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
30

Look, I like their new album (by the time i'm writing this, that's Only God Was Above Us), I like A-Punk and I like Campus. I had high expectations for this album. Way to wreck them.
Besides the aforementioned tracks and little else, Vampire Weekend's self titled manages to be both boring and rough to listen to at the same time, completely ripping off what I don't like about The Police and making it worse by making it pompous and self-important.
If I really wanted to listen ... read more

Lucio Corsi - Volevo essere un duro
80

PREFERITE: Sigarette, Volevo Essere Un Duro (<3), Francis Delacroix, Let There Be Rocko, Nel Cuore Della Notte

Billy Joel - Piano Man
70

Billy Joel's second is also his leap into stardom, with one of his most popular tunes giving the name to the record. So with such an iconic title track, how does the rest hold up? I'd say pretty well.

'Travelin' Prayer' is a rough introduction to side A, as it is pretty different from the rest, but a good one regardless: a lot of people compare this stage of Billy to Elton John, but we can also see a strong Dylan influence throughout the entire record, and especially ... read more

Verdena - Verdena
100

[RECENSITO ORIGINALMENTE SU RYM]

Verdena - Valvonauta
70

[RECENSITO ORIGINALMENTE SU RYM]

Tyler, The Creator - CHROMAKOPIA
70

[ORIGINALLY REVIEWED ON RYM]

Tyler's eight album (or seventh, depending on your opinion on Bastard) features Okonma being introspective as always, but with a different subject matter. Differently from Flower Boy and Call Me If You Get Lost's bittersweet heartbreaks and IGOR's not even bittersweet, straight up soul crushing heartbreak, this one dives into Tyler's more "real" (not to diminish the other themes) issues, such as the pressure of being famous (Noid), his ... read more
