Simple Earth - Fake Music For Broken Computers
70

Pleasant home-made electronic album which promises a fruitful musical development of the artist who publishes under the moniker Simple Earth. Good job, carry on.

Seefeel - Quique
83

The music of Seefeel's first full album gives a feeling like the blue thing on the cover: psychedelic, ambient, dreamy and a bit mysterious. Quique is an album which works in both ways: listen to it as a musical background, discreet and quiet or listen to it focussed, concentrated and with full attention. Therefore it delivers a little more than one hour musical pleasure.

Mark Pritchard - Tall Tales
87

Fantastic proof for the recognition that one and one is more than two, at least sometimes. Tall Tales is the enchanting and co-ingeneous result of the collaboration between the ingenious artists Mark Pritchard and Thom Yorke and therefore a must for my vinyl collection.

Jon Hassell & Brian Eno - Fourth World, Vol. 1: Possible Musics
82

The Fourth World, Vol. 1: Possible Musics by jazz-trumpeter Jon Hassel and musical mastermind Brian Eno is not less than an ambient, athmospheric, spooky, ghostly and spectral musical journey to or better through the - what number of times? - world (according to the cover it should be Eastern Africa, the region around the White Nile. Don't miss the sequel Dream Theory in Malaya: Fourth World Volume Two by Jon Hassel, this times with Brian Eno as "personell" (on congas, drums..).

Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth
87

Boring? Not for me. The only studio album of the Welsh band Young Marble Giant from Cardiff is an evident that there is no unconditional need of high effort to produce an extraordinary album. Only five days for the recording, some tracks only with one take, about twenty minutes for each mix and the forgo of overdubs apart from two for "Include Me Out" (slide guitar) and "Eating Noddemix" (distorted vocals), and ready was the simple and minimal sounding, nevertheless ... read more

Bruce Springsteen - The River
70

I appreceate the first albums of The Boss very much, but the later work couldn't never catch me the same way. Therefore I like only some songs of albums such as The River, here the rock ballad "Independence Day", the title song "The River" and the opener of the second disc "Point Black", in addition remarkable is the high memorable radio hit "Hungry Heart".

Deerhoof - Noble and Godlike in Ruin
83

The seventeenth album of Deerhof is musically similar to its cover: a disturbing collage. The ten tracks are created with different influences and ingredience, such as experimental, noise and math rock but nonetheless the music is partly funky, jazzy and enchanting. Noble and Godlike in Ruin is anything but easy going, neither the music nor the lyrics. Therefore one gets with Deerhof's recent album a both timeless and fascinating piece of musical art.

Self Esteem - A Complicated Woman
79

Last time I decreased my effort to write reviews but sometimes there are weird circumstances which motivates me to continue my writing about music, albums and artists. And here we go, Self Esteems Complicated Woman splits critics and user into two different worlds. Because also the difference between critics and user ratings were significant of her first two albums (93/65 and 79/66) this fact is not a big surprise, but the difference 81/38 is much more huge. It's also a difficult matter ... read more

Stealing Sheep - Wow Machine
70

Something to dance, in any case.

Oren Ambarchi - Grapes From the Estate
78

Very pleasant ambient drone album.

The Beat - I Just Can't Stop It
85

"I Just Can't Stop" listening to this great debut album because it's an enchanting ska/2tone-styled set of some remarkable covers and some really good own songs.

Tunde Adebimpe - Thee Black Boltz
83

Inspiring solo album of the TV on the Radio member Tunde Adebimpe, both, sophisticated and entertaining.

Daft Punk - Discovery
85

"Discovery" is an enjoyable French house album with the world-hit "One More Time" and the unforgettable "Digital Love" and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger". There is a little risk the full album becomes a bit boring in the long run, the more so because it ends with a 10 minute track "Too Long". But if one needs a pleasant musical dance-floor carpet, working on its own, adorned with catchy rhythms and pointing highlights, is very well served ... read more

95

Is This It by the American indie rock band The Strockes is one of the best debut albums ever, timeless till today, full of energetic force and an absolutely fitting example for indie rock of the early new millenium, which led garage rock revival to mainstream attention that times. In addition Is This It contents some unforgettable classic songs such as "Last Nite" or "Someday". Therfore this album is an essential content of my vinyl collection. Love it.

Hesse Kassel - La Brea
90

Hey critics, where are you, what are you doing? Didn't you recognise this outstanding album? Maybe because the lyrics are not in English? Better you pay attention to not miss one of the best albums of the first month 2025. When my little research was right, La Brea is the debut studio album by the band from Chile, Hesse Kassel - and probably the best post-rock album this year, so far. And the listening enjoyement longs for more than five quarters of an hour, spread on eight, mostly broad ... read more

Nina Simone - Pastel Blues
96

Pastel Blues is an absolutely great piano blues / vocal jazz / soul album and the prelude to a row of overwhelming Nina Simone albums in the following two years, maybe this perioud was the peak of her musical oevre. Side on side with the other five songs "Strange Fruit", the more than 10 minutes of "Sinnerman", "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" as well as "Tell Me More and More and Then Some" are all small little song diamonds ingeniously ... read more

Coil - The Ape of Naples
90

The Ape of Naples is the final studio album of Coil and one of their best as well. The "redisign" of tracks such as "The Last Amethyst Deceiver" (original "Amethyst Deceivers" from 1998) is ingeniously successful. My favourite tracks of the album are the first four and the last one. Concidering the death of Jhonn Balance in November 2014 Peter Christopherson's production meets the legacy of his deceased bandmate wholeheartedly. R.I.P. Geoffrey Nigel Laurence ... read more

Jane Weaver - The Amber Light
80

The Amber Light by Jane Weaver from Widnes, Borough of Halton, Cheshire, England, provides beside worth listening songs some very interesting instrumentals and some remixes from Jane's previous album The Silver Globe. Because of this set the album in the whole becomes really worthwhile.

Beach House - Depression Cherry
87

Already the overwhelming "Space Song" is worth to buy the full vinyl, and that won't dissappoint the interested one. And there are other song pearls such as "PPP" or "Sparks". If you like hypnotic dream pop, "Depression Cherry" is able to make you curious about everything else published by Beach House and maybe a fan of Victoria Legrand (who wrotes all lyrics for the album) and Alex Scally.

On daFigz™'s review of John Cale - MiXology (Volume 1)
"thx for you statement, thx for your review. In my opinion this record shouldn't be concidered as EP because it is with 40 minutes too long, maybe it should be as a remix album or regular studio LP. What do you think?"
On Geese - Getting Killed
"Yes, same to me. There were some moments i thought, this voice is similar to another singer, but of whom? And than I could identify, yes, the voice of Cameron makes me think of the voice of Zach. Not really the music, indeed, only the voice, and not over the full album. The voice of Cameron Winter is very varios, I like it very much."

"Masterpiece? I don't know. But, for an example, I would like to draw your attention to one detail: Just listen to "Classical" and the interplay of the vocal tune with the bass run. If that can convince you a little continue with a focus to the usage of piano, strings and brass in the different tracks. Maybe you will like it a bit more then."
