Portishead - Third
93

It felt like with Portishead's sophomore self-titled album, the trio moved into a *slightly* more accessible direction, taking inspiration from the scores and songs of espionage films, but with their next project, over 10 years later they seem to have gone in the complete opposite direction, making a dark, abrasive, electronic masterpiece that has a sound completely unique to its own. Portishead's third release, appropriately titled Third, has Beth Gibbons take more of a backseat to the ... read more

Portishead - Portishead

Fucking hell man, how am I supposed to review this? it's like you've been dropped into a James Bond movie but it's directed by David Lynch. Absolutely incredible.
Favorite Track: ALL OF IT
Least Favorite: NOTHING

-For a more professional review, while I do prefer dummy to this, this was a much more mind-blowing experience and one of the best vibes any album has portrayed to me. Cannot wait to review Third.

Jockstrap - I Love You Jennifer B
89

One of the best debut albums in a long while, Jockstrap creates a sound that is constantly changing, yet still completely unique to them which is something very, very few artists have been able to achieve. The gorgeous yet glitched-out vocals of Georgia Ellery are paired magnificently with the off-the-wall production brought by Taylor Skye, all forming together to create one of the best art-pop albums of the year.
Favorite Track: Concrete Over Water
Least Favorite: Lancaster Court

Kendrick Lamar - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers
83

K-Dot's most subdued, and possibly most mature album yet, Kendrick sheds much of the weight he has placed upon his shoulders, fully completing the metamorphosis he'd discussed with Tupac Shakur on his magnum opus To Pimp a Butterfly. While this album is nowhere near as grand, ambitious, or conceptual as TPAB and Good Kid MAAD City, it still manages to stand as a fantastic addition to one of the best discographies in Hip-Hop history with its simplistic, yet most still impressive production, and ... read more

SOPHIE - OIL OF EVERY PEARL'S UN-INSIDES
96

I cannot believe that we haven't reached a point where this is considered one of the greatest albums of all time, just perfection from start to finish. SOPHIE really captures everything incredible about herself and puts it in this one, mind-blowing package that contains every emotion known to the human mind. Rest in power, SOPHIE.

JID - The Forever Story
90

Everyone and their mother has been raving about this album, and deservedly so, JID truly evolves into the artist he has always had the potential to be with this record, bringing the best of hip-hop out for every track. Best flows, features, beats, and lyrics of the year for sure. Absolutely incredible from start to finish.

Björk - Fossora
85

Is this one of Bjork's most flawed and unfocused projects? Yes absolutely, however, in my opinion, this doesn't have a bad song in sight. While the way Bjork describes this as a rave/gabber album seems like... a blatant lie in hindsight, ultimately I feel this album's sound does not stay in a specific place. This is both to this album's detriment and benefit, as I think the sound of tracks like Ovule and Atopos, while impressive tracks, may get stale after an album worth of tracks. However, the ... read more

Fuck Yes
Beyonce is so kind to let us all experience this journey through dance music with her. This album is seriously such a gift full of immaculate production, gorgeous vocals, and insanely fun twists and turns. Just such a joy to listen to every time.
Favorite Track: ENERGY
Least Favorite: No clue, this album works so well as a continuous piece of music it's difficult to pick one that's noticeably weaker than the others.

Portishead - Dummy
96

The most recent addition to my favorite albums, Portishead really strikes a fascinating in between in many different ways on this album. The production/instrumentation feels not quite electronic, but far from acoustic, while Beth Gibbon's vocals feel powerful, yet quiet at the same time (In a similar way to my favorite album of all time, Vespertine does funnily enough) Truly a magnificent achievement in not just the trip-hop genre, but in music as a whole.

yeule - Glitch Princess
94

By far my favorite album of the year, and as of right now, the entire decade (2 years in). The world Yeule manages to create is one of the most lush and detailed I have ever experienced in music, their glitchy, robotic voice fading in and out of control compared to the intricate production creates some of the most gorgeous soundscapes I've ever heard. Meanwhile, Cmeil's writing comes across as distinctly personal, addressing issues of love, gender, and introversion through a futuristic, robotic ... read more

Quadeca - I Didn't Mean to Haunt You

with occasionally fantastic moments amidst a sea of monotony, Quadeca continues to grow from his youtube rap roots, growing more into his own as an artist.

Least Favorite: Cassini's Division

The Roots - undun
65

An absolutely incredible concept with some killer songs and a knockout ending, undun is an album that could have been so much better if a few songs were tweaked to be more... listenable. The prime example of this is Lighthouse, while conceptually fantastic, it's held back by a few mediocre verses and a terrible melodic chorus. The Roots are one of my favorite rap groups ever, but I can't help but be disappointed by their foray into more conceptual territory.

Natalia Lafourcade - De Todas las Flores
NR

Easily the best singer-songwriter project of the year, the way Natalia's voice seems the command the lush, vibrant instrumentation is truly unlike anything else I've heard this year.
