One of the only bands that has managed to capture the same chaotic but lively energy as Mastodon for me. Fitting given their city of origin, I suppose. Some really beautiful moments on here as well, like the ending of "Gumby" and the bridge sections of "Low Level Gnawing Dread"
They're back with one of the best albums of their career. Aaron Turner slots perfectly in to the void left by Scott Kelly, and I genuinely think anyone else would have resulted in a lesser outcome.
Edit 3/7/25:
I think I was too harsh to this record on first listen. "never come never morning" was SUCH a standout track to me that nothing else could or still can compare, BUT the rest of the album is REALLY solid after listening a few more times (and a couple listens WITHOUT "never come never morning" at the front end of the album to avoid those lofty expectations).
