One of the only bands that has managed to capture the same chaotic but lively energy as Mastodon for me. Fitting given their city of origin, I suppose. Some really beautiful moments on here as well, like the ending of "Gumby" and the bridge sections of "Low Level Gnawing Dread"
They're back with one of the best albums of their career. Aaron Turner slots perfectly in to the void left by Scott Kelly, and I genuinely think anyone else would have resulted in a lesser outcome.
Edit 3/7/25:
I think I was too harsh to this record on first listen. "never come never morning" was SUCH a standout track to me that nothing else could or still can compare, BUT the rest of the album is REALLY solid after listening a few more times (and a couple listens WITHOUT "never come never morning" at the front end of the album to avoid those lofty expectations).
If I could give this song any higher than a 100 I would. It’s crushing, especially the horn solo at the end.
I only find myself wanting more. One of my gateway albums into more extreme metal. RIP Tompa, you were truly one of a kind.
This album encapsulates isolation in its purest form, and it’s beautiful and haunting simultaneously.
If “Diet carissa’s wierd” didn’t sound like a massive insult, I’d use it to describe this album. Of course, Low has their own distinct sound, and aren’t 1:1 comparable to any band, but I find myself loving some songs, but on a few I find myself missing earlier tracks or wishing I just put on Carissa’s Wierd.
A shockingly beautiful work of doom metal that I genuinely cannot remember how I stumbled upon it, but grateful I did.
This album took a few (correction, a LOT) of listens for me to GET it. I always connected lyrically to the themes, especially those fueled by co-lead vocalist/guitarist Dani’s journey of self discovery, but it took a while for the instrumentals to click for me. After that though, it’s some of their best work.
Sometimes I find myself wishing they called it quits after Cycle of Suffering. New songs will bang live, I'm sure, but not something I see myself coming back to in any other environment.
