Gentle Giant - Three Friends
82

Just that you know: I'm feeling kinda burnt out on writing reviews recently, and I also have been studying a lot, so don't expect many reviews for now. I have a bunch of albums I listened to a ton that I would love to review soon, but I have different things on my mind right now.

Very lovely prog from Gentle Giant. All around a very sweet and warm album. They didn't try too hard here and I think it makes the album sound laid-back, and I like that. The production is stellar for ... read more

Crimso - My Condolences

Okay Men, you have impressed me.
Over the span of just over a month, you have learned so much and improved greatly. I am impressed by your improvement in structuring songs and overall, I am impressed by your new maturity in writing. This is not mediocre, this is a solid ass EP. May I even say good. May I even say very good.
It is a shame that these songs got the same smartphone microphone treatment, but I know that you have your limitations so that's fine. You have achieved a great balance ... read more

Carbonated Water - Wenig Kohlensäure
NR

Hey there!
This is the debut album of my new band. Fellow AOTY user @Blibloblublub plays keys and our friend plays guitar.
Please don't expect any serious, tediously recorded album, it's just three teens having fun. That doesn't mean we didn't pour a lot of effort into the album though!
This entire album was written and recorded on May 2nd and May 3rd. Some ideas were floating around, but the band wasn't even formed until that session. That also was the same time we ... read more

Crimso - Ozymandias

I respect you for churning out so much music in a short time, but this just feels like a quantity over quality situation.
Let's compare "Ozymandias" to "Blood, Sweat and Tears", shall we? The solid tunes like tracks 2-4 on BS&T are even better here. The title track is a solid opener and "Spend My Time With You" feels like an improved "Kanye West", if not by much. But the duds are stinkers here. I don't like "Singing" and "The ... read more

Crimso - Blood, Sweat and Tears

I have to be honest here.
While I did enjoy this EP, there are just too many flaws holding it back from a higher score. Obviously, the production isn't good. You cannot always make out what Crimso is singing and the bathroom he recorded it in makes everything very drowned sounding. That's the most obvious flaw. If the production, then also the arrangements were better, the EP would rank a solid 10 points higher for me. But there are also the songs. They feel quite repetitive. A prime ... read more

Steve Reich and Musicians - Music for 18 Musicians

Edit: 92 -> 93 -> 95 -> 100

I beg you to read this review. This is not something I normally do, but this is a special one.

This afternoon, I decided to go for a walk. I wanted to listen to this album one more time before reviewing it.
Whenever I listen to this album, it takes me on a journey. It feels a little bit like floating, if you let it, it will take you to gorgeous musical landscapes. I thought: why not let the album take me to physical places this time? I’d let the ... read more

Mogwai - Les Revenants
57

My godfather gifted me this album on vinyl a while ago and of course I would listen to it.
It’s a collection of songs made for the TV show “The Returned”. I never watched it though, maybe it would give more context to the songs.
I don’t find anything special about these songs, they’re rather plain Post-Rock tracks and not very creative. Most of the songs are built around one motive and don’t progress much, which is understandable for the song’s purpose. ... read more

I love Rush!!!
To me, this album is where the band perfected their 70's sound. It's powerful and heavy, well-structured and with great melodies.
The two longer tracks are just breathtaking. They don't get boring at any point, even if some parts are repeated. I think the last third of "Cygnus X-1 Book II" could have been better, but that's it. Great long songs.
The two short tracks are great as well, "Circumstances" is just amazing. I also like "The ... read more

A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders

This is a very 7/10 album.

I don’t see anything wrong with it, nor do I see anything special about it; I guess I’m not the biggest Hip Hop fan. But don’t get me wrong, I enjoy this album! There are some really good tracks here, like for example the first two real songs of the album. “Electric Relaxation” is also nice. I really like the production on this album, it’s really punchy and bass-heavy but still very clear; the bass doesn’t overwhelm the mix. ... read more

Nickelback - Feed the Machine

Sorry, not sorry; there are some good songs on here and past me loved this album for some reason so there's a nostalgia factor. I mean, 58 is not a very good score, but you'd maybe expect me, the frog of prog, to hate this stadium rock slop. Well here I am, kinda liking this.
Like I said, there are some genuinely good songs on here. The title track, for example, is pretty great and it deserves its user score. It maybe could've used some more variation but overall it's just ... read more

Charli xcx - BRAT

Before you're gonna rant, please read my username, then think about that.

I don't know why I would make this my 100th rating but I don't really care either. Thank you to everyone who supported me along this little journey! If you're asking yourself why I only have 100 ratings, it's because I listen to every album AT LEAST 5 times before I review it. That's because I want to actually remember the albums I review and keep them in my memory.

Now, to the review:

Snarky Puppy - We Like It Here

Thank you so much @ProfessorPlumb for reviewing this album and thus making me aware of this album.
DAMN THIS FUCKS!!!
Absoloutely insane performance by the 20 or so musicians in the studio. Larnell Lewis is a beast for learing those songs in only 7 hours. The compositions are crazy, the grooves are real. The solos, man, those solos! Whole album is so frickin exciting all the time. The problem I have with a lot of fusion is that, while the chops are there and impressive, the compositions are ... read more

Michael Jackson - Thriller

What a great pop record!
Of course, there's the legendary three track run in the middle of the album, but there are some other gems as well. "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" is a great opener, it's funky, it's joyful, and the production, like on the rest of the album, is stellar. I love the progression of the track and how the 6-minute runtime is used to great affect. "Baby Be Mine" is another great track, it's very smooth and soulful. I especially ... read more

Jethro Tull - Aqualung

Aqualung is a really nice album.
It reminds me of Fragile by Yes with its little songs in between the main songs, which I adore. There are three of them and all are really pretty acoustic guitar driven tracks. My favorite one of them is “Wond’ring Aloud”, which is just gorgeous with its strings and piano accompaniment. Of course, I can’t talk about this album without mentioning the incredible title track. Yeah, it’s amazing. It’s structured really well, has ... read more

U.K. - Danger Money

It's a good album, a great one even, but I does not come close to the brilliance of its predecessor. The only song I think is on par quality wise with the songs off U.K.'s debut self titled album is "Caesar's Palace Blues". It just does everything right; it is structured really well, plays with different emotions, creating a distinct vibe, and most importantly: it's groovy af. Other than the grooviness reminding me of the debut album, there's also the electric ... read more

Clown Core - Van
75

Ok this is just so much fun. The two are incredible musicians and it shows. Just listen to the first track, "Flat Earth". It's got a blistering drum groove and an insane sax solo at the end. I think it's the best song here; it demonstrates well what the duo is capable of, while untroducing the shtick of thd band. Also, I wanna point out the incredible lyrics: "The earth is flat because you are fat", that's just so deep man. The next songs demonsrate the ... read more

Gojira - Magma

I was really excited to listen to and review this album.
First time I recently listened, I heard the first two songs and thought: hell yes, this is what I remember, this album is incredible!
Yeah it falls off after those two tracks. The following tracks are all great metal songs, but they don't reach the height of the first two tracks. One thing that I don't like is how predictable some of the melodies are. On the other side, the production is incredible. It could use a treble ... read more

Level 42 - Level 42

Such a fun funk record, it's a shame that it doesn't get so much attention on here.
My drum teacher showed me a live performance by Level 42 one time and I loved it. The next time I was in a record store I recognised the cover, because I was plannig on listening to this album anyway, well, it was only 5€ and I decided why not just buy it, it's surely gonna be good. Yea it is really good.
While it can get cheesy at times, great example is "Starchild", there are some ... read more

Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
81

It’s a nice album, but I don’t view it as one of the best albums of all time. I see how the concept is great and still relevant today though. The album starts with a great 4 track run, but after that, it gets inconsistent. God is Love, Right On, and Wholy Holy are just weaker than the rest. They’re fine, but don’t belong on a “Greatest album of all time”. There are some highlights, also. The opener and title track of the album is just very beautiful with an ... read more

death's dynamic shroud - I'll Try Living Like This

Thank you so much @oldtask for recommending me this album. Listen count: 12
At first listen, I was so weirded out by this musical landscape I have honestly never heard before. The first song confused me for sure and the next one even more haha. But after a few listens, I grew accustomed to the sound. The production value of this is amazing. Everything is right in front of you but still so spacious. The highs are crisp, the bass is defined and not muddy, which amazes me, because some songs have ... read more
