even weirder, disjointed funk from the great d'angelo! very consistent discography, heavily enjoyed, but for all the positives i really think sugah daddy is a really strange tone shift to have mid album, and i don't think it suits the album very well at all (maybe i'm missing something?)
highlights:
ain't that easy, 1000 deaths, another life
lowlights:
sugah daddy, till it's done (tutu)
weirdly darker in places, but nonetheless still the regular sexy, introspective d'angelo that we had on brown sugar, but even further evolved. instrumentals borrow way more from funk and psychedelic music than soul here, with tracks like The Line showing this. big fan
highlights:
the root, spanish joint, untitled (how does it feel)
lowlights:
devil's pie, greatdayndamornin/booty
smooth as hell. boner alert music
highlights:
alright, me and those dreamin' eyes of mine, lady
lowlights:
shit, damn, motherfucker (only lowlight)
what can i say that hasn't already been said, great neo-soul/funk album that feels like a love letter to the genre
but fuck me, california is TERRIBLE he sounds awful
highlights:
me and your mama, zombies, redbone
lowlights:
california (that's it)
funny
highlights:
lifetime achievement award, when he died, as your father i expressly forbid it
lowlights:
touch-tone telephone, man-made object, pizza heroes
