There's jazz, there's rap - and somewhere above the stratospheres of both is McKinley Dixon, sculpting musical perfection from those two ingredients.
I was introduced to McKinley Dixon through 2023's Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!?, after seeing it repeatedly on many hip-hop year-end lists. I loved it from listen #1 and its staying power in my rotation is impressive as hell. Its short runtime makes it so replayable, yet it's still so dense both lyrically and sonically. One track ... read more
HABIBTI is the most boring album I’ve ever heard. While it may not have as many ‘this can’t be real’ moments as MAID OF HONOUR, it also doesn’t climb nearly as high to justify the ‘consistency’ of the album. Because when I say consistency, I’m referring to the project’s consistent sleepiness. The production is too lowkey for its own good, Drake seems to reuse the same few deliveries across the entire thing, and the features don’t ... read more
MAID OF HONOUR is comfortably the 2nd best out of Drake’s new triad imo. When comparing to HABIBTI, I’ll willingly admit that MOH by far has the lowest lows across both tracklists. There are a handful of songs that are outright bad, and it’s quite obvious which ones they are. I don’t think the same can be said for HABIBTI, but at least the entirety of MOH isn’t sickeningly boring.
I think this outcome is what we’ve learnt to expect when it comes to Drake ... read more
Let me get the negatives out of the way first. Drake will always be corny, insecure, whiny, and have the biggest victim mentality in the industry. All of this is very apparent on ICEMAN and unfortunately results in lyrically one of the worst albums I’ve ever heard. It’s genuinely littered with an unfathomable amount of eye-rolling metaphors and a multitude of “I’m the GOAT” variations, all while you could probably find an instance of him feeling sorry for himself ... read more
Thank you AOTY frontpage for this one. Highly doubt I would’ve even heard it otherwise, and now it’s making waves in my rankings for this year. I just kept finding myself coming back to the album over and over - more than most others from 2026. Admittedly it took a few listens to accustom myself to hemlocke’s voice, but once that clicked, I didn’t look back.
Synthpop has always been one of my absolute favorite genres, so I was never gonna not enjoy the production on ... read more
Slightly disappointed by this, but largely in no fault to Boldy or Rome. I found that their dynamic works really well - I think their voices provide a nice contrast and the subject matter aligns cohesively. Unfortunately it’s the beats that let me down. I normally love Craven’s production, especially with Boldy, but the sample chops on Like Biggie Did and Only One are borderline obnoxious to me. Which is a shame particularly for the former, because that’s one of Boldy’s ... read more
