Have a Nice Life - The Unnatural World
90

This thing is incredibly underrated. When I first heard I thought it was pretty good, but nowhere near death deathcon, and so I kinda just left it at that. But after seeing them live in the summer I’ve been going back to this more and more, and it’s really grown on me. This and deathcon sound pretty similar in places, but the way this album is structured is like a 50 minute gut punch, packing heavy distorted noise and quieter ambience. Particularly the first run of tracks is ... read more

Dove Ellis - Blizzard

I’ve seen lots of comparisons to Cameron winter for this album, which makes sense, as he supported geese on tour this year and has now dropped a soft singer-songwriter debut album in December that will likely go overlooked for a bit. I think this is a fair comparison, and I definitely expect him to grow massively in popularity over the next year or so, but I think it’s a high bar to set being compared to someone like Cameron Winter. I also think they’re going for different ... read more

2slimey - High Anxiety

I was interested to check this out after fantano mentioned it combined more noise music elements in its production, and then seeing power noise as a genre on here. However I think it would be better and more interesting if it leaned into the power noise more, basically abandoning any traditional ‘beat’ elements all together. There are some good tracks, but overall it’s just a pretty generic rage album. I hope he goes more into a harsh noise sound in the future though.

Hayden Pedigo - In the Earth Again
85

Going into this my biggest worry was that Hayden’s contributions would be drowned out by the aggression of Chat Pile, and while that was true on some songs, there were equally as many where he took centre stage, with very little chat pile present. While I like both these styles, where this album truly excels is on the songs where they blend their sound perfectly, like the two single for example, with the menacing, buzzing bass and ambience of chat pile paired perfectly with a slower ... read more

Yung Lean - Jonatan

When I first put this album on, I got to the first two tracks and turned it off. I was expecting to really like it, after enjoying much jonatanleandoer96 stuff, but it was genuinely awful. However I came back to it and persevered, and discovered an incredible and interesting album hidden behind two mediocre to bad opening tracks. I absolutely see why people don’t love this, but to me it’s a beautiful work of passion, that actually has some of his best singing on it. Overall I really ... read more

Car Seat Headrest - The Scholars

This was probably my most anticipated album of the year, and when I saw the track lengths I was immediately excited, and expected yet another 10/10 album. Therefore when I finally heard the album I was pretty underwhelmed. It wasn’t what I was expecting or wanting at all. It took me a long time to step back and appreciate this album for what it was. However when I did I came to see how great it was. Far from my favourite thing they’ve done, and I think the story of the album ... read more

Quadeca - MONDAY - A COLORS SHOW

Best song on the album is made better

Cameron Winter - Heavy Metal
89

I think what I appreciate most about this album is the small details in each song, the weird instrument in the background of cancer of the skull, the subtle violins on $0, and honestly just the percussion throughout the whole album. Although these aren’t what you notice first when hearing any of these songs. The lyrics are incredible, instead of trying to describe them I’ll just put some of my favourites here:
I am wired to the man, I take the train at dawn for him
We may go ... read more

Lee Tracy - Is It What You Want?
NR

Jesus this is something special. I’ve never heard anyone even come close to attempting to blend the genres they do here. The incredibly lo-fi quality mixed with the electronic production and beautiful soul style vocals is a blend I wouldn’t have thought could work in a million years, but it absolutely does. Listen to this now if you haven’t, specifically I need your love, that song is heavenly.

Swans - To Be Kind
96

This album, like many others by swans, took me quite a while to get into. For many others it was about curating a listening environment to fully unlock the music for me, but this one is a bit different. In my opinion at least, it doesn’t require that so much. I think it’s a more flexible album for me personally to enjoy. It’s also just incredible. I came back to it after seeing them live earlier this week, and I gained a new appreciation for it. I found myself focusing in more ... read more

Swans - Birthing

It took me a while to get to grips with this album. I listened to it the moment it released, and was kind of confused and underwhelmed, but that was mainly due to being ill at the time, and not really getting into the music. I was unable to shut off my other thoughts and focus on it fully. I did know that there was something special to get from this though, and I tried listening to it while staring into a mirror late at night, but it really wasn’t clicking and I just fell asleep. Anyway ... read more

I haven’t listened to all of this, but what I have heard is actually quite good and interesting, his new stuff is funny but I don’t get the hate here

JPEGMAFIA - SCARING THE HOES: DIRECTOR'S CUT
65

I do agree this is kinda pointless, we already got the DLC tracks, that felt like enough of a deluxe already, and I do agree that this is kind of lazy on Peggy’s part as well, but eh. Having said that I love the Danny brown solo track, it’s so goddamn weird it feels right off of atrocity exhibition, and it’s cool to see alternate verse takes in places I think. Pretty meh overall but still kinda interesting. Also I was so annoyed when hermanoes ended and he hadn’t put ... read more

Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
95

I think there are two main reasons for this album specifically being the highest rated of the decade so far on here. First and foremost, it’s just incredible musically, the builds and payoffs are immense and effective throughout and the sonic palette it constructs is sublime. The second reason is much sadder, I think that for many young people, especially those that use sites like these to express their love for art, the feelings of intense anxiety and depression this album deals with are ... read more

Geese - Getting Killed

I fucking love the ending of this album so much. The sound of barreling towards something terrifying at full fucking speed without any idea of what will happen or where you’re going is such a great way to send off an artistic statement in today’s age.

Hayden Pedigo - I'll Be Waving As You Drive Away

Wow. This is just some amazingly lovely and easy to listen to music, I really enjoyed this a lot. I don’t have much else to say really, this was just very very enjoyable. Thank you chat pile

Magdalena Bay - Second Sleep / Star Eyes
NR

Might just be me but I find Magdalena bay fans insufferable. I’ve never heard much of their music, but I would probably enjoy it, which strangely turns me off listening, as their fans just seem to think they’re the fucking coolest people in the world because they prefer a slightly underground pop duo to mainstream music
EDIT: I listened to this and it is pretty great, star eyes is better than second sleep though

"I would agree on most points, what I found so interesting on ILDMLFY was the introspection and usual Peggy lyrics contrast, the crazy new production style and the focused, tighter tracklist than many of his other albums. But I think the criticism of stagnation isn’t as important, he’s experimented with new elements on pretty much all his last albums across his career, so I think him not doing so for the first time is ok, I’m happy to just have more of the same, even if it isn’t as good as lots of what came before."

"This is yet another really good review, I’m not massively familiar with their previous eps, having only heard the first one once before listening to this, but I was personally very satisfied with their take on post punk post rock, I was really hoping they wouldn’t end up copying BCNR with the loud, sudden dynamic shifts to end their songs, so I loved the shorter songs either having a soft slow build or being fiery and brash throughout, and as for the longer songs, I found the mixing to be great, being grimy and muddy on something like look down on us, but then delicately balancing all the elements equally at the end of reconcile, and I loved how the length allowed them to morph or shift into sonic phases. Also I preferred the sax to before."

Also, don’t feel pressured to do more reviews than you want to, I always appreciate the depth and personality you bring to them, but if you need to take time for yourself thats far more important."
