the sort of sad, queer person angst in a melting pot of post-rock, noise rock, IDM and breakcore that zoomers on TikTok just LOVE. Sadly this is actually a pretty overlooked release which is a shame because it really is the very best you can get out of this niche and specific scene.
I appreciate Spiderland as progenitor for a lot of the stuff I would come to like later on and the styles of music it pushed but I found myself having a hard time fully letting myself get immersed in the sound of it. The spoken word element is something I really didn't appreciate here, it made the songs feel like a slog and the ones that kept it to a minimum were not the highlight musically. A surprisingly competent showcase of musical writing. Rephrasing the same idea of writing a Soviet-Russian, classical piece that's actually impossible to play on the piano 8 different times. The issue is that it's the same song with just a different melody in a different key each time, encased in 2017 meme humour of "Haha I'm a crazy Russian guy!!! Rush B сука блять am I right guys.... hahaa" which I never found all that funny
strange how Hail to the Thief barely ever comes up in conversation, when it comes to discussing Radiohead's discography. People tend to only really mention 2 + 2 = 5. It's a shame, though. I love pretty much the entire tracklist. I love how seamlessly they blend the Rock elements with the Electronics on display. As opposed how they did it on projects like Kid A and Amnesiac. They kept the Rock songs and Electronic songs separate, here they combine beautifully.
Words Words Words contains some of Bo's best moments. Songs like Rant and Men & Women are really fun and I love the introduction with What's Funny. I also love the 2 studio renditions of Oh Bo and Words Words Words for how 2010's they feel and their live counterparts. And then there is arguably one of Bo's best songs ever Art is Dead, a self-reflective criticism on the inherent selfishness of most artists. Top 5 Bo tracks territory for sure.
