BARELY ALIVE - WATTSTEP Vol. 1

They're fun enough, but bring almost nothing to the table that EOTI can't do better.

beastboi. - LOUD AND FEAR
84

The third studio LP from underground briddim producer beastboi., "LOUD & FEAR" is a no-frills, distorted bass music experience. Being quite a bit shorter than his previous two LPs, the banger-to-dud ratio on this one is also the highest yet, with more or less every track here being worth the listener's time. While it does start to slip just the tiniest bit in the backhalf, it is over so quickly by that point you don't really have the time to feel it.

DotEXE - Borrowed Happiness
72

After over a decade since his debut record, and even longer since his peak in popularity, DotEXE has delivered a sophomore album, quite divorced from any of the soundscapes he was working with in the 2010s, even underneath Summer Was Fun. This project is far more in line with a french and prog house sound, with only a few tells here and there in the actual synthlines to indicate it's made by DotEXE.

But is the record actually any good? Well, with the genres on display here becoming more ... read more

grape milk - why do you grow distant white boy?
71

More of an atmospheric, bedroom-core project than "medium", unlike many of the previous 'atmospheric' projects from grape milk, I think this one is actually quite successful at tapping into that more mellow side. "live love tragedy" in particular is an absolute vibe of a track, that deconstructs EDM in a really interesting and engaging way for me. While the remainder of the tracklist is a tad more mixed, I still think the end product is a satisfying listen overall, ... read more

slayr - Half Blood (BloodLuxe)
85

Not only a good rage album, but a GREAT one!??!? We finally got there chat. So much life in these beats and performances, with genuinely super fun bars interspersed throughout.

Getter - UNORTHODOX
77

If MC Ride becomes a prominent sample subject of the next wave of low-end bass music I honestly won't complain too much.

KARAN! - SANGURAL
78

Blending brazilian funk and dubstep, KARAN! comes through with a decently enjoyable crop of tracks. Though, the ones that landed the best for me were also the ones which leaned more into the funk direction

INFEKT - ORGANIC DUBSTEP
75

Me when I'm in a cringey vocal sample contest and my opponent is INFEKT.

The fact I still like this track goes to show his quality as a producer.

Taylor Swift - Opalite (Skream Remix)
50

Doesn't take enough risks for being a remix by Skream for me. I mean I do think the changes he made here a sensible direction to go after the original but like he just didn't do enough here man. Just reads as Taylor trying to beef with Charli more since Skream already remixed "von dutch" for her. That said I don't hate it, I just think it's whatever.

Alicia Kiah & Kursa - Low Key Technique
83

Kursa and Alicia Kiah are back with more violin-entwined halftime and dubstep. Basslines are slick, melodies are therapeutic at points, just a really vibey release all around.

Coral Blue: 7.7/10
Falling: 8.2/10
Ignium: 8.7/10
Bioluminescence: 8.3/10

Dylan Brady - Needle Guy
78

Techno drop could've been better but the drum texture on the tearout sections is more than adequate. Unfortunate that this came out in 2026 and not 2023 though

Zomboy - Time Machine
80

A great throwback to an age long passed by now.

"@voicelikehoney i don't hate all emo, some of the best albums I've ever heard are emo. Vocals are what tend to make or break this genre for me. I almost never go into a project expecting to hate it unless it's a project by an artist I follow regularly, And if I ever do I still hold onto the hope that I will still find something of value. Additionally, this was an album I happened to listen to on a stream. My opinion may have even changed on it at this point since it's been so long."

"Also i find it interesting you dislike Animal Instinct but like Breakdown, as I feel like our ratings are probably switched. Idk i think Animal Instinct has one of the most fun drumlines and melodies of any SW track from that era, while Breakdown is a limp, misguided headscratcher of a track for me, and it makes complete sense why the VIP would go on to completely overshadow it later."

"Ampersand actually wasn't on the original comp, instead it was pulled from the edm spotlight collaborative comp which came out the following year to fill in for the track House by OVERWERK, after he pulled that track from the label, you can still hear it on the album mix though. I will say that House is one of the better tracks on this comp as it was originally intended, though pretty aggressively 2012"

"@svse idk, I feel like music by KAIFU and JoeB (even Figure a few years back) manages to outdo Camellia in terms of intensity for me, it's nowhere near as fast paced usually, but to me they're the ones pushing bass music to its breaking point the most in the current environment (In JoeB's case its more about his odd rhythms). And i would also make the case that, while maybe not as busy, Kobaryo often manages to match Camellia in terms of intensity. I've been meaning to get into Diabarha for a while now, but what I've heard of their music has also come pretty close, albeit less varied."

"My journey with listening to music more seriously really started with EDM as well, Approaching Nirvana, Tiesto, and Daft Punk when i was young, before I found Monstercat and followed them religiously from 2015 until about 2022 when I branched back into some of the older hits I just never heard on the radio in my youth before finding Björk and getting hooked onto listening through albums over comps and EPs. After a year of binging through fantano's top 200 LPs of the 2010s, I found new ways to appreciate the music I'd grown up with, as well as a whole new selection of genres to listen to to prevent my experience with that music from ever going stale or myself becoming jaded towards it."

"There is a blatant production error in the first 20-30 seconds of the track, this is something not even Borgore has done with his deluge of terra-slop. A bad mix is generally all it takes to tank a riddim track in the present time, a production error is straight up inexcusable when being released on a major label."
