Maybe it's just because I have higher expectations of OLP, but this album is such a let down compared to their earlier work. The energy isn't the same, and it feels forced.
Stealing babies changed my world the first time I heard it
This album encapsulates a certain manic energy that I resonate with heavily. Once the bassline in the title track kicks in, I feel like I'm being warped to another plane
The synthpop sound of Cause and Effect breathes some fresh air into Keane's sound. In a way, this feels like a better executed Strangeland, especially in regards to the songwriting. Songs like You're Not Home, Put the Radio On, Strange Room, and Thread reinvigorated my love for the band once I actually listened for the first time
I've tried to listen to this album multiple times, but I can't remember a majority of the tracks on here. I feel like Keane leaned very heavily into the early 2010's radio-pop sound for this album, and as a result it feels less special compared to their earlier work. Silenced by the Night and Disconnected are passable retail songs. The big standout for me is Black Rain, which feels like it should've been the closing track on the album instead of being in the middle
I really enjoy the experimentation on this album. It's a more energetic listen, and it's a lot more varied, keeping things interesting in each song. My only real complaint with the album is certain mixing choices, but they're minor nitpicks
Tracks like She Has No Time, Sunshine, Bedshaped and Untitled 1 are clear highlights for me. However, the rest of the tracks don't stand out as much to me as I've grown older. I still enjoy the sound of this album, and can't call any part of it *bad* outside of missed potential in some areas
The moodier songwriting combined with Andy Green's production work has made this an all timer for me. Nearly all the songs on here have been in my favorites rotation for my entire life
