sex proof - HEARTBREAKERS
56

Another release with not much to say, it leans more into the Noise Pop that SUFFER started. I really don't have anything to say about this besides the general comments that it's boring and forgettable.

Squee - squee LP2
68

It's fine, It's definitely the best and most polished of Squee's solo efforts, but it's still nothing amazing. The singing is nice and the bits of instrumentals that I can decipher are also decent.

Ween - 12 Golden Country Greats
64

It's not bad, I just don't have many thoughts; I'm not giving it a mediocre score because the songs are terrible or anything, they're just pretty forgettable. They blend together and the fact Ween only primarily contributed to the vocal recording that a lot of the interesting ideas from the band's production style don't get to shine.

Ween - Pure Guava

The best album out of the brown trilogy, for sure. The songs feel a lot more fleshed out instrumentally and I think they're a lot more successful at the slower sound that The Pod tried. It takes on a more Psychedelic sound that mixes very nicely with what the band had been doing up to this point. I still wish there was more tempo variety as so much of this album is still bordering on being a little lethargic, but at the end of the day it's the most consistent out of Ween's early ... read more

Ween - The Pod
36

Basically everything bad about GodWeenSatan, without any of the positives. For as obnoxious and pointless that album could be, it at least has energy. GWS was at the very minimum a fun listen, with some decent instrumental moments scattered across the album. The Pod almost entirely ditches any sense of uptempo songwriting, and most of these songs just feel so sluggish. The instrumentals are, again, a lot less energized, but they're also just generally more boring than on GWS. The vocals ... read more

Star Starer - SUFFER
52

I'm mixed on the different style of this. It's a lot more Noise Pop than the Bedroom Pop of previous Star Starer releases, and it doesn't always work. I do enjoy the sleaker and more bouncy sound of Star's more Indie stuff, but the loud moments hit way harder on here. There's still a fair amount taken from the Bedroom Pop style, mainly on the opener, but it's nice to hear a change even if it's still not great.

Star Starer - summer jams
50

More forgettable stuff, the first two songs are okay the last two are boring. Really not much to say beyond that, definitely not super into the Star Starer stuff.

Star Starer - angsty teenage ost
60

A bit more straightforward than their debut under Star Starer, but not a ton better. The ideas are cool enough but this is an insanely boring listen, nothing really grips me enough to leave a last impact. The production doesn't help either, it's so sleepy and the guitar tones are really disinteresting. I couldn't tell you a single thing that happened on this album, even if it's all decent.

drug bug - Interlinked Infinity
76

Very interesting, I think this is a really cool exploration of Alex's more ambient and softer side; sonically this feels like a more experimental epilogue of wetdream, and I think that's really cool. I would love to see them explore this sound more because I think they do a very solid job of it, and I think a full LP or side project release exploring this blend of Ambient, Post-Rock, and Folk could be great.

drug bug - wetdream (perfomed in full)
80

Just about as good as you could expect for this to be preformed. The group is tight, the arrangements are as close as realistically possible to the original, and besides a few moments Alex does a pretty decent job at being a stand in for Squee. While not officially a WillyRod album, and it's a shame that for whatever reason Squee wasn't a part of this, but I think this is a great way to cap off their discography even if it may be under the Drug Bug moniker.

Star Starer - plastic passion
56

By far one of the more boring WillyRod adjacent releases. The whole atmosphere is pretty sluggish and while there are some cool Noise Pop cuts most of this just isn't my thing. Electric Wizard especially is pretty indulgent and just made me wish the album ended at D O W N.

Star Starer - love song for a bulldog
54

Not that bad, just boring. I find the sonic palette on here pretty interesting, and I'm curious how the rest of Star's discography plays with that. The vocals are meh and so are the lyrics, it's not terrible but I wouldn't choose to listen to it.

maybe next year... - crack? atleast im not drinking brian :(

Extremely bad but extremely charming. It's noisy, short, and just kind of all over the place, but to a certain degree you have to smile at it. The pretend cover is nice enough but the other two don't leave much of an impact. Very clearly a project not meant to be taken seriously, but I actually kind of enjoy the piano focused version of Pretend with the cute vocal harmonies on top. (that is, before the weird screaming noise kicks in.)

Willy Rodriguez - Live at recycled propaganda
40

Yeah, pretty rough. Towards the backhalf they get it together for a halfway decent performance of Yr Biggest Fan, but this entire thing is just not good. The guitars are out of tune, pretty much everyone is playing way too sloppily, and a lot of the time is spent trying to figure out technical difficulties and talking to the audience rather than playing music.

66

The best of the demo volumes, but not by much. I think the songs on here are a little better, Rip Yr Skin Off (here called untitled231) Emoboss and the Bodys cover are all fantastic and boost this up slightly higher than Volume 2.

64

The songs are a lot more fleshed out, both in terms of songwriting & production, but ultimately it's still very clearly demos. I'd rather listen to the finished versions, but I can understand how a release like this might be exciting for someone really familiar with the band.

60

It's okay, it's not necessarily bad just lacking substance. Nothing here excites me and I can't see myself even really thinking about coming back to anything here. I think it's interesting on a meta level to here a primary Alex focused demo, but besides that it's mostly just fine.

Willy Rodriguez - Wetdream (patreon demo)
78

I mean, it is a demo, but definitely not in the way I expected. I was anticipating rougher versions of the songs, not just half the songs, fully finished, from the original tracklist. Regardless, it's cool to hear a different order of these songs and the two FHR's compilation tracks fit nicely on here.

Willy Rodriguez - Silly Love Songs For Unfortunate Break Ups (B Sides)
70

Pretty average for this era of the band. It's stylistically in line with Spirit Number, that being the Jangle Pop stuff with distinctly more distortion than Silly Love Songs or Bad Therapists. Honestly not really much to note, it's nice to hear (I think) different mixes of Vampira and Rip Yr Skin Off, but besides that the other songs are just okay. Not too much to note, there's other songs by the band that do this style better.

Ween - GodWeenSatan: The Oneness
62

Extremely weird, possibly the strangest album I've ever heard. It's absurdly long, off-kilter, inconsistent, but it still somehow comes out as at the very least an interesting project. There's a lot of great moments but there's equally as many tracks that I can't stand, somehow those two balance eachother out to land this project a pretty neutral score.
