Robbie Basho - Visions of the Country
72

Pretty weird, but cool. I'm not always into his voice and I think it can get a little boring on the longer songs, but it's still nice.

Yaelokre - Hayfields
56

Definitely a case of something just not being for me. Nothing about this on a quality or technical level is bad, the production, vocals, and music is all well done, I just don't personally care for the Neo-Medieval Folk stuff. I think it's interesting that people make it but this EP especially feels a little too "twee" for lack of a better word. It's by no means bad I'm just not personally interested.

Robert Lester Folsom - Ode to a Rainy Day: Archives 1972-1975
86

Fucking amazing, I enjoyed this infinitely more than I was expecting. Robert is strong as a songwriter and vocalists but the actual music completely blew me away. The production in unison with these layered but not suffocating arrangements makes for a masterclass in Psychedelic Folk and Low Fidelity Singer-Songwriter. There's a number of different sounds he tries out all while staying consistently great. So cool, for sure worth a listen and it makes me very excited to see what else ... read more

Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
80

Some moments definitely shine brighter than others, but a very solid album. The production on this may be my favorite thing about it, the reverb and delay drenched demos making up this album are so perfectly imperfect and it makes the album so much better for it. I definitely prefer the softer and more intimate moments, but the whole album is at it's very worst consistently decent. I like the vocals and lyrics, but some of the more story-teller songs can get a little dry the longer they ... read more

Ween - Shinola, Vol. 1
82

Honestly: one of Ween's best. Despite it being a compilation this might be the most consistent Ween project (besides 12 Country Greats which is obviously different.) I think this has Ween firing on all cylinders instrumentally with even the brownest songs on here still being great. The back is definitely a lot better than the front, the last couple songs specifically, but the front is by no means bad. My only issue is that there's not really a ton of vocal or lyrical moments that ... read more

MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS - MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS
76

I definitely prefer their follow up, but this is an interesting start that definitely carries the same intent as World Is Yours. I like their way the band delves into both longer and more directly noise inspired passages, but besides a handful of moments it's largely a lesser execution of what would come.

Ween - The Friends EP
32

Wow, I really hate this. The last song is tolerable and I'm almost tempted to rate this higher because it left a good taste in my mouth, but this EP is a complete shit show. Who wanted Ween to make electropop? Who wanted an entire release (albiet a short one) practically dedicated to that sound?

MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS - ワールドイズユアーズ [World Is Yours]
86

Insanely good Noise Rock, this album/EP does a great job at blending melodic and pretty vocal tones with completely pummeling Post-Hardcore & J-Rock. I'm very interested to see what their other output consists of.

Ween - Live in Chicago
76

It's nice, but definitely not as crazy as people make it out to be. These songs generally range from being slightly better to definitely worse when compared to their studio counterparts. Pork Roll Egg And Cheese is the only song I'd consider a direct improvement, but most of the songs are still okay even if they are subpar to their non-live versions. The production is fine for a live album but definitely a detractor for me, the vocals and instruments definitely get muddy at certain ... read more

Jan Jelinek - Loop-finding-jazz-records
72

Solid ambient, I really enjoy the textures but beyond that's it's nothing crazy. The songs sometimes drag but I like how it's able to verge in and out of Ambient Techno.

Macseal - Map It Out
66

It's alright, just a little boring. The riffs, songwriting, and vocals all feel a little less authentic or well made; I'm just not crazy about their slightly more polished stuff.

Combat - Counter Intuitive Presents: Cosmic Debris, Vol 2
48

Not a big fan of this sound, the more & more polished that 4th Wave and Pop Punk bands get the more it just gets on my nerves. The Origami Angel song is decent but besides that I just don't really like the sound they're going for on here.

Disco Inferno - D.I. Go Pop
62

Yeah, it's not my thing. It leans way more into the experimental sound than I was expecting, the Plunderphonics elements are something I had no idea were a big part of DI's sound, but they're featured so prominently on this record. I also don't really enjoy the singing, and the instrumentals are largely too boring for it to balance out.

Flight Patterns - there is no montauk
70

Mostly a fine listen, a lot of emo in this style has grown off me and seems a little cliche, but this album does an okay job at avoiding that. The insturmentals hard cary the album, they aren't amazing or anything but they're done nicely and pretty much all of these songs have a very strong ending, which I like. The vocals and lyrics are just fine, I have nothing to really comment on with them, you get what you expect from a Fourth Wave project.

Gingerbee - Our Skies Smile
74

Definitely both a lot more electronic and emo influenced, the Chamber Pop sounds all over Apiary are all but absent on this EP. I'm not crazy about it, but it is a nice release. It definitely lives in the shadow of it's successor by virtue of both quality and ambition, but this has it's own identity and sound outside of that.

東京酒吐座 [Tokyo Shoegazer] - Remains
76

Pretty solid, I'm not usually a Shoegaze guy but this is nice. I think it's mixed really well; the balance of using too much or too little distortion is done well on here and the album is a lot more polished feeling as a result. The guitar tones are great and the Noise Rock elements are what make this album for me personally, I think it adds a much needed layer of sonic depth. The vocals are also nice but the songwriting is just okay, both lyrically and insturmentally.

matt proxy - teenage genius 3
72

Pretty interesting, I don't agree with the idea that this the best song of all time like many people are currently saying, but it's still good. Honestly I'm kind of indifferent about a good half of it, but the back Spoken Word / Gospel section is really beautiful. It's cool, not sure it's my thing or for me, though.

Magdalena Bay - Nice Day: A Collection of Singles
80

I think people overhype this a lot. It's good and especially well produced, but the way people talk about this being both some of the best music of the decade and an extremely diverse set of songs. I do think both of those have merits as claims, particularly the diversity side, but I don't think these songs are as great as people claim.

Geese - Alive & In Person
78

It's a solid live performance, but nothing crazy. The mix is extremely honest; which in some ways is good and bad in others. Being able to hear the bass and keys is great and allows a deeper appreciation of those elements that I feel like sometimes gets lost on studio mixes, but simultaneously almost all of these songs just feel kind of thin. Not even in a production way, I just feel like the more transparent mixing style shows how thin certain arrangements are. Cowboy Nudes especially, ... read more

Star Starer - emotional shawty
50

Yeah, I'm less into the Noise Pop stuff for sure. This is just so boring, it's worse than other Star Starer releases but not terrible or anything.
