JPEGMAFIA - EXPERIMENTAL RAP
70

An almost classic from Peggy, better than anything I’ve heard in years. I really like how he’s fully developed and went down the rabbit hole on the production style from Scaring the Hoes and his last album. Well, it’s really always been his style but he’s really honed in on it this time. Too bloated like most modern rap albums, at least 6 tracks of just filler or intros stuff.

I know his whole thing is staying with experimental and underground sounds, especially this ... read more

We are so (kinda) back

Sella - Well I Mean
90

I needed this so bad

Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
80

The album has an overall BEAUTIFUL message, and the production is 11/10 all the way through. I understand why this is typically rated so high. But, especially at the midpoint of the album, it got a little too sermon-y for me. Some songs I could listen on repeat forever, some I don’t see myself coming back to often unless a full re-listen. If it was just based off message it’d be 10/10, if it was just based off production it’d be 10/10, but as an overall listening experience ... read more

The Scythe - Strictly 4 The Scythe
50

A shallow album of posse cuts/party tracks with pretty great production. I’m not disappointed though, I think this is exactly what it wants to be. Curry is obviously the standout. Nothing special here, but nothing bad at all either.

Baby Keem - Ca$ino
80

This hurt me bad, I was so hyped. Excellent production, and the emotional highs hit, but damn I really expected a classic out of this one. Second half of the album is butt, Too $hort feature is butt, even the main Kendrick feature is butt. It’s not god awful and actually a pretty good album, I just had such high hopes for this one :(

OutKast - Stankonia
75

I really, REALLY expected to enjoy this one more! André 3000 is one of my all time favorite artists, but I really walked away from this more disappointed than I thought I would. This being my first time listening start to finish of course.

It’s really disjointed, but sometimes in a beautiful artistic way. Sometimes it sounds like a mixtape and sometimes it sounds like a meticulously crafted masterpiece. The production is really next level for 2000s and combined uncountable ... read more

Jason Isbell - Foxes in the Snow

Just a man and his guitar. One of the best current songwriters/poets we have.

$uicideboy$ - THY KINGDOM COME
65

Same ole same ole from the boys. As always I adore their production, and their Houston/Memphis fusion with modern Trap. But sadly, I feel like $B only have 2-3 specific songs I seek out intentionally, mostly to me they are just a vibe. I’ll put on a $B playlist before I’ll put on a $B album or song. I really want to hear some diversity in their style, imagine them trying out 80s boom bap or another subgenre of hip-hop. Still believe JPEGMAFIA and $B deserve more recognition for ... read more

Clipse - Let God Sort Em Out
80

The first half of this album is just pure perfection. I really think brevity could’ve elevated this album a lot, but I think that about a lot of modern albums. If this were 7-8 tracks it’d probably be 9.5 or 10.

Still, this is probably the best straight hip-hop album in 20 years. But “straight hip-hop” I mean no experimenting or genre-bending or even creating new genres, which I feel like has been the norm for hip-hop since about 2005. Everything is either trying to ... read more

Barenaked Ladies - Gordon
65

I really thought I’d be giving this record a 10/10. Barenaked Ladies has been a constant background music choice in my family while I was growing up, and something about the production and the voices of the original two singers is just buttery smooth to me.

But honestly? This album just confused me. I can’t piece it together. I’ve never really sat down and tried to analyze or judge BNL, except for a few of my favorite songs of theirs. I can hear The Front Bottoms type of ... read more

JPEGMAFIA - Veteran

I really just can’t get behind Peggy as a rapper/singer/performer. It’s not that he is dog shit, it’s just none of his lyrics or performances really wow me, almost ever. There are some exceptions, of course, but I just can’t help but feel disappointed by his performances compared to his IMMACULATE production. Peggy’s ideas, vibes, sample choices, sound selection, arrangement…. Just absolutely incredible. The most exciting and forward-thinking that I think ... read more

Doechii - Alligator Bites Never Heal
85

Not my favorite album of 2024, but incredible nonetheless. Personally, I don’t really love the sexier, r&b type Doechii songs. They’re definitely good, but it’s just the other content she has DELIVERS. I get that she’s just being versatile and hitting all markets, but I think albums these days are too long, and a more focused album with a central theming would have gotten a higher score from me. That grimy, rappity rap Doechii with masterful Houston, West Coast, and ... read more

Knocked Loose - You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To
70

I really want to rate this higher, because the production and talent on this album is INSANE. It really pisses me off when people moan “music today sucks” and “there’s no real MUSICIANS anymore” when there’s bands out there like this.

The rating may seem low, but I try to put my personal opinions first so that my reviews aren’t just regurgitating what other people and publications have already said. In my opinion, this shit rocks and would go so hard ... read more

ScHoolboy Q - BLUE LIPS
80

This album is so exciting and really pushing the envelope of modern hip-hop. Truly forward thinking and you can never guess where it’s going. When you think you’re headed right, it hits you with a hard left. But honestly, that’s also a detriment to the album as much as it is a strength. There’s so much going on and so many ideas and momentum that it’s rare to have a settled moment for Q to find a groove. Definitely no radio hits on this thing. I can see it getting ... read more

Snoop Dogg - Missionary
65

Definitely not a bad album. Debated between 65 and 75 because the production is just that good. Easily the best produced hip-hop album this year. This album is the Rocky Balboa (Rocky VI) of hip-hop. Legends coming back for one last ride to the distance. Nothing groundbreaking or incredibly exciting, but solid production and Snoop sounds better than he has in years. Highlights are a full Sting rap verse, which was unexpected, and Method Man absolutely destroying a west coast Dre beat. The back ... read more

Method Man - Tical
80

I’m running out of things to say about the golden age Wu albums. RZA is so consistent and his production is eternal, Mef is one of my favorite members. This album is the dirtiest and grimiest of this first era of solo albums, sounding more like RZA’s Gravediggaz sound than anything else. Method Man rips every track, this is an all time classic. The only thing I hate is the Method Man remix, that song is one of my favorites off Enter the 36 Chambers and this remix is just ass to me.

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
NR

It’s impossible for me to judge jazz/non-lyrical compositions. It activates the producer/musician part of my brain and all I can do is appreciate it. Same for paintings, I just enjoy it and take in what I can from it. Of course this music is great, but I just have no solid thoughts or judgements other than…. yeah that sounds nice, these guys are talented.

Green Day - Saviors
60

Meh. That’s all this is. Meh. It’s a grab bag ranging from “oh shit Green Day still kinda has it” to “this is cringe please turn it off”. I feel like Green Day overstayed their 90s welcome and that American Idiot was the perfect Swan Song for their legacy. Now, they kind of just rehash the same chords and ideas every couple of years. Not a terrible album, definitely listenable. I’m sure modern teenagers will like/love it. It’s just hard ... read more

Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...

The album that made gangstas into gangsters. The influence of this album cannot be understated, it changed the East Coast scene forever. The impact this had on legends like Nas, Jay-Z, Biggie Smalls, Fat Joe + Big Pun, Mobb Deep, all the way up to new artists like all the members of Griselda and more. A truly cinematic album with some of my favorite production by The Abbot. Featuring every Wu-Tang member except, sadly, ODB. But they greatly made up for his absence with an awesome Nas feature. ... read more
