It's no wonder Stankonia consolidated OutKast's status as critics' darlings, and began attracting broad new audiences: its across-the-board appeal and ambition overshadowed nearly every other pop album released in 2000.

Experienced, acclaimed groups rarely make albums as bold and confrontational as Stankonia, because they have too much to lose. OutKast don't care.... The Atlanta duo coalesced the political and societal challenges of hip hop's past into what is one of the genre's most artistically unortodox releases so far.

They may come from the same part of the world as Arrested Development, but Stankonia - a concept album full of magic realist imagery and between-song skits - ain't no southern-fried hick hop; it's a cyberdelic, future-rap masterpiece.

Walls of trombones, gospel choirs, stuttering rhythms and two-step breakbeats back up Andre 3000 and Big Boi's rapid-fire, introspective rhymes. It's all eerily familiar but also sounds like it's from Mars, and hiphop is better for it.

It’s still funky as a motherfucker, it’s still smooth most times, it still drills home messages with more force than most touchy feely emcees could ever hope to do, and it still makes your trunk rattle, your windows shake, and your ass move.

This album could be labeled as alternative hip hop album, in the same regime as The Roots, Black-Eyed Peas, due to its various and distinct beats. However, if this album is not considered as one of the top ten albums of the year, it would truly be a travesty and a great disappointment.

Dre and Big Boi fill their technicolour vision with the ghosts of Sly Stone, James Brown and, most notably, Funkadelic-era George Clinton. Factor in some distinctly unorthodox production and you've rap at its risk-taking best.

Stankonia is staking its claim to sovereignty. A geographically elusive and psychedelically warped mental landmass, this is no playa-haters’ paradise, but the place “from which all funky things come.” Not Monaghan town, in other words.

Seriously some of the most fun I’ve had listening to an album in a while. Outkast entertains you with their unbelievable word play and amazing flows that make this album an experience from start to finish.

Is it a hot take that I didn't enjoy this album as much as others did? bc I love the experimentation and the retaining atmospheres of the melodies, sometimes reminiscent of ATLiens but it's that it sometimes is too much. Don't get me wrong: the production's great, some of the songs are iconic, the rapping by both Big Boi and André 3000 and the charisma and humor really adds to the experience.
