I think while Omnivium is overall better, some of my favorite songs I’ve heard while listening to Obscura’s discography are on here, like the opening track (Sermon of the Seven Suns), the title track, and the closer (Weltseele) are all amazing Progressive Death Metal tracks, especially the closer, very melodic and epic yet it has a good amount of aggression. The playing is on point as always, and I like that the bassist has a good amount of times where he can shine. Overall, this is ... read more
Every great band has their humble beginning. Converge had Halo in a Haystack, which was basically just a straight Hardcore record with some Emo sneaked in there, and Ulcerate, the (in my opinion) epitome of Dissodeath, had a couple of EPs that played Technical Brutal Death Metal with a tinge of that Dissodeath we know and love. The Coming of Genocide is a compilation of a couple of their first releases that really encapsulates what their original sound was like. It’s good, but I’m ... read more
Turns out combining most of my favorite metal genres results in a pretty enjoyable album! Who coulda guessed?
Yet another great Post-Metal/Screamo release this year. This definitely leans more into Post-Metal in comparison to the Screamo aspect than the new Frail Body album but they’ve got some similarities. This album has a lot of striking melodies though, the clean vocals are balanced well with the screamed ones and sound pretty good for the most part. I found the atmosludge to be really compelling here, its got a huge guitar tone and the drums and vocals fit perfectly with it. The blackgaze ... read more
Ironically after doing drugs and “liberating” themselves, (as they put in their description on Spotify) Microwave has become way more commercial than ever before.
I distinctly remember the first time I listened to Death is a Warm Blanket. Although that album wore its influences on its sleeve, I personally love it. It had this particular grime that their previous albums didn’t and by the end of the final song, Part of It, I felt like I had really experienced the album, rather ... read more
1st Album: Alright guys we are a metalcore band, sure we’ve got some grindy sections but we’re a metalcore band, got it?
2nd Album: nvm we’re actually Sludgy Powerviolence my bad.
3rd Album: fuck it, play grind. that shit rules
4th Album: deathgrind is much cooler, screw regular grind.
5th Album: hey wouldn’t it be funny if we threw some power electronics in there and made the drums loud as shit lol
6th Album: actually fuck all that we’re doing weirdo ... read more
An interesting take on Dissodeath, adding a hefty amount of Deathgrind into it. The album overall is good but damn that last song really ties it together.
It’s good, but way overrated. There’s a shit ton of Deathcore stuff which I normally wouldn’t mind too much but I feel like it clashes with the Dissodeath part of the album. Also the vocalist sounds like he’s trying to do an impression of Luc Lemay hald the time. I don’t usually try to make comparisons of that nature but that was all I could think of when listening to this.
I came into this album expecting a knockoff of Ulcerate and… that’s not really what I got? I mean there’s a good amount of Ulcerate influence, don’t get me wrong, even down to the band’s name, but I feel like there’s a lot that sets Ulsect apart from Ulcerate. It feels like they took the general idea. (Dissodeath + Atmosludge) and threw in a lot of Black Metal, and I think it works pretty well. The vocals are way different, not necessarily much worse but ... read more
Ulcerate’s 3rd album is their sludgiest, and reads more like a Neurosis type Post-Metal record than a Death Metal one. While not as visceral as Everything is Fire, I think the atmosphere it brings to the table makes the change well worth it.
Everything is Fire has quickly become one of my favorite Death Metal albums of all time. It’s Ulcerate’s most intense, brutal, dissonant, and technical album to date. Not a single skip, just as the title says, everything is fire.
For some reason I decided to listen to this even though I’ve never heard a Technical Thrash album in my life. I definitely like it though, especially the way the drums sound. God damn I love that snare, every fill, every blast, literally everything the drums do sounds great in part of the great production but also just the skills of the drummer.
Sadly though, I think some of the weirder stuff dragged the record down for me. I’m not a fan of the vocoded(?) vocals nor some of the ... read more
Absolutely relentless BDM with undertones of Goregrind, even peaking into Gorenoise at points. Absolutely phenomenal.
DAMN that kick is hella loud. Half the time it drowns everything else out. Still kinda fun though.
