I think it's safe to say this was worth the wait.

What makes this album very special is that there are aspects of every prior Deftones album embedded into this one. Instead of going for the radio single, the band went for a super cohesive experience with various callbacks all over the place. And it works really well. It's meant to be experienced in full and should go down as a solid album this year.

It's hard to blame Hatebreed for refusing to change their sound. Their riffs are catchy, but songs are very rinse and repeat. The lyrics will always be good for motivational posters and inspiring messages to bring to the gym, but it's not enough for me to really enjoy the full breadth of this album.

I only tried this out because of the switch for them to Sumerian Records and I'm not going to sugarcoat it: this is horrible. Corgan's voice is the most modified and distorted I've ever heard him and it makes the album virtually unbearable. The songs are also very poppy and lack the originality of their older sound. I have no idea why they have done this to themselves or who hurt them enough for them to change their sound, but I really wish they'd go back to their sound from "Siamese ... read more

Definitely enjoyed a lot of aspects on this one. This has deathcore vocals, but has a lot of instrumentation from Veil of Maya, Born of Osiris, and After the Burial, which makes for a pretty good combo. I bopped along to a few of these tunes in a good way. Definitely an interesting listen overall.

This kinda felt like an album I'd play while doing scuba diving. I can't say anything bad about strictly instrumental music, but I rarely revisit it and I don't find technical prowess in music all that fascinating. I'm sure it's worth checking out if you vibe with this.

This album kept my interest the whole way through. This feels like a pretty great step in hardcore music and provides some pretty moody, atmospheric moments without being too overbearing. At points, it felt a lot like Nine Inch Nails or Daughters, but a little less chaotic. I imagine this will grow on me with multiple listens.
