Spiritbox - Eternal Blue

The hype for this album is very real. Modern metal and progressive have a new face and it is Spiritbox. Well done.
Full review:

Spiritbox is a Canadian progressive metalcore group featuring former members of a project called iwrestledabearonce. The band consists of vocalist Courtney LaPlante, her husband and guitarist Mike Stringer, bassist Bill Crook, and drummer Zev Rose. O'Brother - Endless Light

I first got this recommendation as "Muse but post-metal and not gimmicky" and this is exactly right. It's now one of my favorite atmospheric albums.

Without spoiling the experience in here, it's sort of a metaphysical journey into the soul. There's a lot of bleak, almost apocalyptic moments found in here with some brilliant atmospheric sections in between. Plus, the album artwork is simple, yet brilliant.

I feel like this is a very underrated album many people will likely not hear ... read more

Manchester Orchestra - A Black Mile to the Surface

I've been wanting to write this review for a while. I don't know if I'll be able to write everything I want, but I think I can cover a lot. I've been listening to this album on repeat for the past few months and I truly believe this is one of the best pieces of music ever.

I never really listened to Manchester Orchestra (MO) often, except for "I Can Feel a Hot One", which I enjoy a lot. The band itself is inspired by creating music and stories with friends, sort of like an orchestra. ... read more

Invent Animate - Heavener

Maybe I'll regret this rating, but maybe not. This feels like what progressive metalcore should be.

I think the problem with the genre stem from copcats and clones. There's so many clone bands that none of them stand out from each other. And Invent Animate was really no different than Thornhill, Rogue, Mirrors, Pridelands, Dreamwalker, etc. But I think the way this album flows from idea to idea just feels intentional this time. I get genuinely excited to listen to this album.

I do, however, ... read more

Periphery - Periphery V: Djent is Not a Genre

Everyone is giving this album a bit too much credit. There are great aspects about this album, and maybe I'll come to like them, but it also has aspects I cannot stand.

Here's the worst: some songs on here are straight up pop songs disguised as metal songs. Both "Silhouette" and "Dying Star" have nothing interesting to offer. They are some of the worst Periphery outings to date and they need a lot of rework.

But, there is some best: "Wildfire" has a lot of ... read more

Before this album, I really thought Haken would go for the modern prog djent sound and do that for 5 more albums like they did with Virus. I'm glad they tried something a bit more adventurous. I won't be surprised if this ends up on year end lists for popularity, but it might end up on mine just for being creative.

are you going to listen to the new The Wise Man’s Fear release? Definitely their best release, in my opinion.

Yes, most of my ratings from this month were from June 3rd because there was a lot to try out that week. Anything above 75 I recommend and anything below 50 I do not recommend.
