On their latest album, these Swedes have temporarily settled into a position as the AC/DC of math-metal, focusing on the leanest, meanest and most head-scratching variations of one simple riff over the course of 13 tracks. Proof that being the AC/DC of anything is not wrong.

Will I always be in the mood to listen to an album like this one? Of course not. Do I think the "Catch Thirty Three" experiment is a success? Most certainly.

This seems like a bit of a black sheep in terms of Meshuggah's "classic" albums, and I can kind of get why. It's very experimental and can come off as a bit monotonous. But personally I think this is extremely overlooked and can easily stand as one of their best albums. The riffs generally repeat the same overall patterns over the course of multiple tracks, but there are enough variations in the rhythms or background textures to keep it from becoming tedious. And the overall ... read more
