Clairo’s song writing is something that has really stuck out for me on her past projects and I think this album not only maintains a cohesively written theme but it also maintains a soundscape that fits within one realm while still differing enough to not become bored. By incorporating jazz and funk elements she offers this elevated take on her previous “bedroom pop” work. I think it all works so well and a couple of the songs on this album are among my favourite of the year.
Despite having some phenomenal tracks and being an overall wonderful album experience, the difference between this album and blonde is that there are a couple of straight up misses on channel orange. I like vibes and the soundscape of Blonde and consider it a more cohesive piece whereas channel orange feels like a collage of wonderful things that seems like it was put together lacking the consideration of other projects Frank has released. Was very pleasantly surprised by this project. Been getting into Gucci a lot more recently and this album definitely contains some great verses from him but the highlight is B.G, a perfect mix of cutthroat bars and iconic flows that left me nostalgic for the trap era they come from. Highly recommend a listen to anyone, it may not be perfect all the way through but there’s definitely takeaway tracks.
Although the creative vision is there, at the end of the day this album is just a gimmick. It works well a couple times and that’s all it needs to do.
