Evanescence - Sanctuary

Amy sounds great and the songwriting is quality but I cannot get past the production on this album. The guitars and drums just sound horribly sanitized. I normally don't mind Jordan Fish but it just doesn't work at all here. The production bothered me the entire time I was listening to the album and just makes me want to go listen to Fallen or The Open Door instead.

Dormant Ordeal - Tooth and Nail

Can't believe I missed this release last year. Genuinely one of the best death metal records in the last few years. This style of technical blackened death metal is basically crack for me. The drumming on this album is really good and the melodies and riffs are top tier.

aespa - LEMONADE

Aespa have made it really hard to be a fan the last few releases but this album is great a return to form. The instrumentals have the right energy and vocals are on point. It falls off a bit in the back half (Roll is absolute garbage) but with bangers like Lemonade, Camouflage, and Switchblade, I found myself really liking this release. Easily my favorite kpop release of the year so far.

Dimmu Borgir - Grand Serpent Rising

I did enjoy the fist half of the album but got pretty tired of the sound after that since it is fairly one note overall. Not a bad album by any means but the length is holding it back.

Draconian - In Somnolent Ruin

Another wonderful album from Draconian. This is the band that really got me into doom and their previous album, Under a Godless Veil, is one of my absolute favorite albums of all time so I came into this album with high expectations and they were absolutely met. Lisa's vocals are just as good here as they were for Draconian's first five albums and Anders' harshes are the star of the show on several tracks. While not quite on the level of the last couple of albums with Heike, In ... read more
