Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
88

Truly an album that feels like more than the sum of its parts. On my first listen, I knew I’d loved the album but hadn’t picked out many of the standouts since it all just melded into one cohesive experience. And on the second listen, I realised that uh that’s simply how I lived it. And conversely to most albums, here I much preferred the latter half (which in terms of runtime is the last 3 songs) which somehow lent itself to a much more interesting album experience.

Car Seat Headrest - Twin Fantasy (Face to Face)
82

Consistently great yet never spectacular, I derived a pretty equal amount of enjoyment from the whole album. Except track 3, which made me immediately run for my tobacco pouch; didn’t need that kind of negativity in my life.

Black Country, New Road - For the first time
72

I'm a bit surprised I didn't like this more in all honesty, but there was just an itch that wasn't being scratched. Perhaps a promise of more energy or just something more interesting, which I only really found on Science Fair and Opus especially.

파란노을 [Parannoul] - To See the Next Part of the Dream
78

A quite wonderful all-encompassing noisy haze, a big complaint is that the vocal melodies just felt... lacking. I was always expecting a note more or different which didn't deliver and slightly disappointed me, but it was nontheless beautiful.

The Cure - Seventeen Seconds
85

Has some of the grooviest bass lines I've ever heard, this is a great atmospheric middle ground for the Cure.

death's dynamic shroud - 失われた時REGRET [Regret When It Was Lost]
71

This was fun at first, but by the 45 minute mark I just got bored and wanted it to be finished. Track 9 is pretty spectacular though, also number 6 and 17. Maybe some others were just as good but I rly couldn't tell you the difference between them.

bl4ck m4rket c4rt - Today I Laid Down
83

A crossover of black country new road, bedhead type slowcore and a bunch of shoegaze thrown in for good measure. Pretty amazing

I’ve mostly heard this album described as sad, depressing. And obviously such things as sadness, emotion and music are by definition subjective, but I suppose my own experiences and views lead me to live this very differently and disagree with this common interpretation. If I had to describe this album, I would go no further than the very title - death consciousness. This is not an ode to misery, it is an exploration of our relationship to our impending demise and inevitable ... read more

PinkPantheress - Fancy That
75

Incredibly rare occurence of lackingluster listening to non-depressing music‼️ I've preordered my next day of happiness for July the 23rd, who knows what I'll listen to then. Anyways, this was just a lot of fun. Nothing too special imo, it wasn't too emotionally investing or substantial but just 20 min of pure bubbly jolliness. Very underrated state of mind, I greatly recommend it to my fellow internet gremlins.

Red House Painters - Down Colorful Hill
76

This album has me at an odd conundrum, as I adore the atmosphere of this, but the songs themselves are just lacking a bit. Apart from medicine bottle nothing truly wowed me, but the overall feel and depth is very enjoyable.

Belle and Sebastian - The Boy with the Arab Strap
73

Didn't enjoy this quite as much as their subsequent album, it didn't have that same tinge of a magical feel to it. Or maybe I just don't like (relatively) happier music. Oops

Thievery Corporation - The Richest Man In Babylon
72

Not many standouts, but certainly inoffensive. Just some really chill, mostly background music.

The Autumns - The Angel Pool
74

If you're a fan of luscious shoegaze instrumentals and the voice of Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), you'll definitely love this album. Unfortunately, I only really like the former.

Brian Eno & John Cale - Wrong Way Up
63

I suppose this album serves to me as an admonition of the dangers of expectation and perhaps comparison. For that I may mutter some meaningless, oft-repeated platitude about how our existence and beliefs of the future are governed by our imperfectly incomplete presuppositions and emotional incontinence; but I certainly won't do that, since I am by no means some insufferable whelp with a penchant for incoherent verbosity (and fuck all sleep).
In any case, I entered this project being ... read more

Belle and Sebastian - Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant
78

A wonderfully whimsical, soft and enchanting indie pop album with a tinge of melancholia. A bit weak in the middle yet brimming with magic, notably in Waiting For the Moon to Rise, a delightful ode to yearning and uncertainty.

La Fève - ERRR
77

Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind
82

A pretty fascinating album tbh. I was certainly daunted by the sheer size of it as bloated LPs are a frequent gripe of mine, but it absolutely didn't detract from it, instead feeling like a meaningful feature. Soundtracks for the Blind is constructed much less as a collection of individual songs (I barely saved a few for solo listening) as a fabrication of a curated experience - and lord but is it bleak and unrelenting.

Half the songs were instrumentals and the other half long, dystopian ... read more

Fishmans - LONG SEASON
84

God that near-10 minute interlude of intermittent sh*t plopping noises interjecting into what consequently sounded like toilet water waves lapping against the bowl really took me out of it. Maybe I was just in a bad mood idk and idc. Rest is great though. My idiotic spotify brain also hates the format of it all being one song but the choice delivers pretty spectacularly.

Alphaville - Forever Young
90

Yeah I simply adore this album for some reason, probably my favourite 80s synthpop album. Almost all the songs are incredible: the build up on Victory of Love, the synth solo?? on It's a Melody, title track's just a classic, Big in Japan is certainly amongst the best the entire genre has to offer.
Last 2 are probably my least favourite, but they definitely don't take away from the whole experience; a synthy storm and great vocals picking you up and dropping you in a world of ... read more

Locust - Morning Light

Some amazing songs on here, but just a bit too long I feel. Ended up feeling quite repetitive.
