"wHy woULD hE SCREAm so lOuD, he's RUINInG The SonG!!!!!!!!!" - teenage me when this album came out.
Returning to this now, oh how naïve I was.
SOTY. Any other time would be in contention, but considering the current circumstances I can't see anything dethroning it. Transcendental.
What the fuck this is actually insane. I'm not as big of a fan of the babymetal stuff she's put out recently, but this is ridiculous. This song has more energy than most Playboi Carti songs, it's unreal. The production is absolutely disgusting, it doesn't sound like much else out there at the moment. I'll be watching Poppy very closely from now on.
This album was 10 Christmases and birthdays all rolled into one for me. After Cherry Bomb, all I could think was "fuck, an album that sounds like Find Your Wings and Perfect/Fucking Young would be lit".
Well. Safe to say this album is the most an album I've highly anticipated has EVER exceed my expectations. My jaw was on the fucking floor my whole first listen of See You Again. "It's fucking happening", I remember telling my brother who couldn't give two shits about what ... read more
Although I personally don't like it as much as Flower Boy (see my review on that for why), IGOR sounds like a perfect evolution of Tyler's sound to bring not only some of the best bangers of his career, but some of his most emotion and heartbreaking. Fantastic stuff.
I hate myself. Why do I like this so much? I show all my friends this album and they all hate it with a passion, and I can completely understand why.
Yet I can't. Stop. Listening.
It's the perfect blend of the abrasive pop/PC Music style production that I am a *slut* for, and insanely, gives you cavities they're so sweet hooks and verses.
Truly the epitome of music that you pray doesn't come up when you've got your playlist on shuffle in the car with your mates.
Even the musical shitposts ... read more
Absolutely stunning, the quintessential baroque pop album you'd show someone if they asked "wtf is baroque pop and what does it sound like?"
So keen to see Weyes perform this album live in February.
Currently my AOTY. Although I prefer the sound and aesthetic of LP1/Melissa, there is no denying that the songwriting and overall polish of this album far surpasses it's predecessors. I know the comparison has been made 1000 times now, but it really does sound like the 2010's answer to Homogenic; beautiful, lush, organic yet alien, and all pulled together with a beautiful vocal performance. Just beautiful.
In contention for AOTY. Obviously the mixing is muddy and washed at points, more so than he lo-fi genre and aesthetic needs, but the songwriting a lyricism is some of the best all year. Would absolutely love to see this get the Twin Fantasy treatment sometime in the future, but obviously that's not an original thought.
Excited to see where Weatherday go from here.
Is this the best album of the year as indicated by where it once sat on the user scores list? No.
Is it an incredible blend of noise, shoegaze and emo, and a triumph for a solo indie artist? Absolutely.
EDIT: I was wrong, this is one of the best albums of the year. Could and should go down as an indie classic.
