After something like Pornography, it was going to be hard to pull off a new wave, mostly lighthearted album. The Cure themselves probably knew this, with how dark the opening track Shake Dog Shake is compared to the rest of the album. Nothing The Cure makes has really been *bad* to me, but as a whole, this is one of their more forgettable albums, with gimmicky and silly songs with bizarre lyrics which show that experimenting doesn’t always pay off. A gimmick album that WORKS? With experimental music that can’t solidly be labelled as just one genre? Okay, I need to check out more of this band.
