Marina (and Mitski) - personally responsible for getting me through being 15
After something like Pornography, it was going to be hard to pull off a new wave, mostly lighthearted album. The Cure themselves probably knew this, with how dark the opening track Shake Dog Shake is compared to the rest of the album. Nothing The Cure makes has really been *bad* to me, but as a whole, this is one of their more forgettable albums, with gimmicky and silly songs with bizarre lyrics which show that experimenting doesn’t always pay off. A gimmick album that WORKS? With experimental music that can’t solidly be labelled as just one genre? Okay, I need to check out more of this band.
Maybe I’m biased as a big The Cure fan, but it’s a pretty strong debut. There are some tracks that feel amateurish and just weird, and I agree with other reviewers that this album plays it a little too safe, but I can’t stop coming back to some of the songs on this (and we all know Boys Don’t Cry is a classic!)
Thank you Robert Smith for turning me goth with one of the best albums of the 80’s
Doesn’t hit as hard when you’re not 13 anymore
It’s okay, honestly. There’s some good songs with at least a little replay value, but a lot of the album feels like filler to me. The production feels… off (?) too, it’s not badly mixed or produced but at the same time it doesn’t always fit.
When it’s not generic indie, it’s a fun and lighthearted album with some unique ideas (and a little bit of corniness which honestly somehow fits Tally Hall’s brand well). Banana Man is 5 points off the review at the LEAST though.
Massively influential in dream pop, shoegaze and alternative music in general. Though it doesn’t have the gothic feel of their first few albums that I like, this is one of my all time favourites in the genre, not just out of their discography. Totally worth a listen.
Peak. That’s it, that’s the whole review. It’s just Good Music, what else do I need to say?
Siouxsie is one of the most iconic female voices in the goth and even rock scenes, and even though this album is slightly overrated in the gothic community, it deserves its good reviews.
Possibly the most insufferable pop song ever made, combined with the absolutely shitty implications of the lyrics. Even Meghan Trainor’s worst can be rated higher than this.
