Björk - Debut

A very promising debut

So I've heard about Björk for years, but I hadn't actually heard her until now, and I was surprised in the best way possible. The opener Human Behavior goes unbelievably hard. The marching drums combined with what I'm assuming is a synthesizer, and Björk's passonate and unique vocals is absolutely amazing. It's probably the most in your face track, though others have their moments. And this is in no way a detractor as many of the other tracks, (Venus As a Boy, ... read more

A layered and astounding punk album

I've never heard an album like this before. Sure some may sound like this, or look like this, or write like this, but they will never be this one. Every song has so much charm and thought put into it, with Verlaine's clever lyricism and the virtuosic instrumentals, there is no better description of it than a masterpiece. It's a shame they weren't able to create an album like this again, but once is definitely enough. I will likely return to this album until ... read more

Soul Coughing - Ruby Vroom

Zany and groovy

I was surprised at how pleasant this album was. I didn't expect the hour to be handled as well as it was. While there were certainly better and worse tracks, there were no duds throughout the album. The jazzy bass and samples created a fittingly idiosyncratic backdrop to the vocalist's rambling lyrics. With all its strange elements, you'd think this album slipped through a portal from another dimension. It was quite enjoyable and definitely worth a listen.

I can't say I've heard much Shoegaze, but I know this is good

This album is beautiful, with buffeting guitars and spacy synths, and some dynamic drumming to back it up. It was an extremely enjoyable listen, and deserves much more attention than it seems to have gotten. I will be coming back to this album without a doubt. My biggest criticism would be towards instrumental variation, but even then many songs break the mold very well. I'll admit that criticism isn't helped by the fact that I ... read more

Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left

A vignette of a spring afternoon

This album captures a simple beauty akin to the warmth of the sun. Despite some of the ensamble orchestrations, it maintains an air of uncomplication, aided by Drake's poignant lyricism. The sadder themes are expressed equally as simply, which makes them almost more impactful. I want to lay down in the grass by a river and listen to this until the sun sets. It is not what I was expecting in the best way possible.

Weezer with worse Asthma

As fun as some tracks are, others are just forgettable or dumb. There is a certain residue of cringe that settles over all of these tracks, largely because they are theatre core. When the songs are good enough, you don't really notice, but it just makes the bad songs worse. Anyway, Ruler of Everything is probably the best song these guys have ever made so thats a plus.

(Score: 94 --> 100)

So, uh, I want to retract literally anything bad I ever said about this album. Sometimes even good songs just take forever to click with me. Every song I said I didn't like before now sounds amazing. The only song im not a super fan of is House of Cards funny enough, though I don't even care because everything else is literally the best. Anyway Radiohead is fast becoming my favorite band ever, so yeah, I get no bitches.

Ow

This album is as good as it is miserable, and that is very on both counts. BC,NR's instrumentals are just as intricate on this album as on their last, except they seem to have moved away from the Slint inspired sound portrayed on their debut. Instead their horns are poppier and their strings are art-rock oriented. These elements combined create, if not exactly an orchestral sound, an ensamble one that feels full, fleshed out, and dynamic. Though I greatly enjoyed the sound of their last ... read more

Beautifully bleak

This album is dark, and it makes that point clear right from the beginning. The opening movement *The Dead Flag Blues* feels like a lament for a crumbling and corrupt society. I see streets of filth and famine, skyscrapers crumbling, obelisks of a capitalist society that fed until it consumed itself. *Slow Moving Trains/ The Cowboy...* feels like a revisitation of earth after a time skip, the aftermath of the squalor depicted in TDFB. The world has crumbled, its resources ... read more

Fun and expressive

This record is tight and well executed. The instrumentation is snappy and melodic, gliding through different time signatures with ease and contrasting soft and sharp well. Every instrument is played very well, and any non-standard instruments added are well incorporated and executed. The vocals are expressive and done well for their style. It is easy to sound too whiny and annoying while singing this way, but I believe this record avoided that most of the time. Something ... read more

Pretty solid hip hop album

Curry drops some solid lines on this album, backed by catchy basslines and melodic samples with a solid central message.

Ambitious and Impressive

This record is phenomenal. The instrumentation is complex and catchy, many atonal riffs and brass shrieks play through my head at random intervals. Wood's lyrics are frantic and concerned, and his delivery sounds appropriately agonized. Their influence from Slint is clear, but not too derivative to detract from the sound and meaning of their music. This record is a journey that I return to often.

Hey pretty good

This is a good album, its the second U2 album I've ever listened to, the first being the iTunes album, and I'm glad to say its much better. The songs are pretty consistant on this record and Sunday Bloody Sunday is an absolute bop. The instrumentation isn't particularly complex, but it serves its purpose well, and Bono's voice is passonate and powerful.

Weezer - Pinkerton [Deluxe Edition]

Best B-sides I’ve ever heard! This is the definitive edition.

If you have been anywhere near Weezer fans you have heard the eternal argument of whether Weezer (The Blue Album) or Pinkerton is better. My answer has always been, “Blue, unless we’re including Deluxe albums, then Pinkerton,” so here we are. This album takes honesty in music to its logical extreme. It asks, “Is it better to be honest in your music if what you feel is gross.” And as Incel-esque ... read more

Goodbye David Bowie

This is the first David Bowie record I have ever listened to, which is unfortunate, because this record feels like a goodbye. It feels like I accidentally watched the last episode of a long, rocky TV show, full of emotional gut punches that fly over my head. In any other scenario I definitely wouldn't have started with this type of record, but I heard a few seconds of Lazarus and I literally couldn't get it out of my head. I needed to hear the whole thing. . . So here we ... read more
