Despite having fun songs, competent production, and some strong choruses, the album fails miserably between trying to prove it doesn't care about other people's opinions and actually showing something new. In the end, it forgets to give me reasons to care.
I got the feeling that the internet exaggerated a bit with this album. Not because it's a good album, because, for me, it isn't, but because some people talked about it as if it were one of the worst releases of the decade. The reality is less extreme: it's simply very bland.
The album isn't bad, folks. I confess that my second listen to it was actually quite good. It doesn't deserve the disaster reputation it's gained in certain circles. It's a pleasant album, extremely well-produced and easy to revisit; it's just not the triumphant return that a hiatus of almost ten years made seem inevitable.
It's an enjoyable album, full of memorable moments and important to BTS's history, but it didn't reach the same artistic level as their best works. It functions more as the beginning of a larger narrative than as its high point.
It might not be the most profound album of the decade, nor the most innovative. But it's one of the best examples of how to transform simple emotions into extremely accessible music. And sometimes that's enough. Is it repetitive? Yes. Is it a hit album? VERY MUCH SO.
