Summertime Butch 2 just came out, so I decided to listen to the first installment. Griselda is one of my favorite rap collectives because of the consistency that Westside Gunn, Boldy, and other members bring. In this album, the only consistency I found was how boring the tracks were. Given the success of Benny the Butcher’s earlier albums (Tana Talk 3 and Burden of Proof), you’d think Summertime Butch would offer more lyrically, but that just isn’t the case. Album of the day (July 15th, 2025)
Honestly, better than I had expected. A very solid record for Joey, but not quite as close to some of his other albums in his discography. Some of the highlights included the thoughtful tributes to Steez, X, and Junior B, along with laid-back and strong production from Statik Selektah. Joey continues to kill it as he progresses through his prime, but aside from Joey, no one else wowed me outside of Gunn and JID having solid verses.
