Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet
83

Sensational follow up, more approachable and listenable than nation of millions and has the legendary track fight the power, I think it suffers a little by having such a great predecessor as the issues Chuck D stands on were already perfectly expressed in their previous album, however it still stands as a fantastic beacon of protest and I think it being made after NWAs historic rise makes it really interesting as Chuck clearly acknowledges the groups influence

Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
90

Flava flav kinda pisses me off but this might supercede Straight Outta Compton as the most important hip hop album ever made, completely ignoring cultural significance and focusing purely on music it's almost jarring how the message is delivered, boogie down productions offered very slick informative lyrics that were meant to make you think about your role in the world, NWA was pure rebellion but Chuck D so brazenly addresses the system oppressing him with such confidence and frustration, ... read more

Big L - Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous
88

Ahead of its time, punchline after punchline strung together more effortlessly than any other rapper I can think of, most songs have at least 2 moments where you're like fuck how do you think of that, it's raw it's aggressive it's real it's swag as shit dead homies on god on god

Little Simz - Sometimes I Might Be Introvert
87

Intimate and personal as is to expect from Little Simz, the storytelling has an almost slick rick quality where it flows so effortlessly you forget it's a piece of music and not just someone telling you something. The afro influences in the beats with the grand orchestral interludes and openings make it a one of a kind listen, overall banger

MIKE - Burning Desire
78

Surreal, unique and experimental, the tracks flow beautifully into each other and change tones suddenly as they evolve but not in a way that feels jarring, I don't know if there's any tracks I'll be revisiting and bumping all the time I like it more as a collective experience but it's still adeptly made

Tame Impala - Deadbeat
52

It's not unlistenable but the tracks at their absolute peak don't offer anything that I couldn't have gotten better and more thought out on another album of his, the worse tracks on it are just dull from start to finish theres no real journey you go on it's just a plain simple beat with one or two repeated lyrics, my old ways is rated one of the better tracks and I find it goes on for a good 2 minutes longer than is necessary

Black Moon - Enta da Stage
82

Best bass in any hip hop album, the bass is very consistent and distinctive too which gives everything very easy to distinguish like you know you're listening to Black Moon. The lyrics are grimy in a way that doesn't quite contrast the beat but certainly elevates it. Really solid album start to finish

Al Green - Let's Stay Together
83

A comment on tiktok said al greens music was life-changing, it's certainly very close, soft and intimate in a way that must draws you in. Concise too which is appreciated

Donny Hathaway - Donny Hathaway Live
94

As of the time of listening this is the best live album/performance I've ever heard, the chemistry between all the band members is unmatched and they all get their moment to shine, such a diverse and groovy experience with more traditional songs and covers and lengthy jam sessions interwoven perfectly

Cameron Winter - Heavy Metal
83

I think there's something very special and important about an artist having such a distinct style, I prefer Cameron with Geese however on his own you can really see his unique quirks and stylistic choices and while I prefer the sound of geese there's a unique charm to the solo catalogue, it feels like Cameron's creative vision is translated the most faithfully and his songwriting really shines in the more folky singer songwriter setting

Stevie Wonder - Innervisions
85

Not my favourite Stevie, living for the city and higher ground just aren't really my thing blasphemous as it is to say but it's still Stevie Wonder it's nothing short of genius from start to finish, not as grand as Songs in the key of life but it isn't trying to be, it's beautifully bright and playful soul with fantastic messages and commentary

Gang Starr - Moment of Truth
92

I had always heard about Guru being an unrecognised great and had heard beats from this album in best beats lists very often, eventually gave it a try and was immediately taken aback by the richness of the lyrics on display. If conscious hip hop had a Mount Rushmore Guru would undeniably be placed up there, each track is such a distinct and elegant dissection of the issues facing America before the turn of the millennium and despite being white as chalk and from another continent I could ... read more

Donny Hathaway - Extension of a Man
81

Some of the best vocals to ever be performed, the tracks are somewhat inconsistent and i feel if it was slightly more compact it could have been an all time great however it's still a heart wrenching soul performance that is undoubtedly a classic

McKinley Dixon - Magic, Alive!
80

I don't like this album as much as everyone else seems to which is heartbreaking however it's still an excellent album, the production and beats are unique and distinctive and the lyrics are deeper than I ever expected, the features are all fantastic. I can't put my finger on just why I'm not as crazy on this as everyone else but it's a fun theatrical time

Aretha Franklin - Lady Soul
91

Performances that have never once been replicated, I could live without a track or two but prime Aretha Franklin is hard to find faults in, you can see the influence of gospel and singers like Sam Cooke very clearly however it's all blended beautifully into her own powerful style

Hozier - Wasteland, Baby!
75

It's good. The production I feel lets it down a little, maybe I'm just not listening hard enough but there's a certain hozier signature where songs end in this big climax which is definitely true here however it doesn't blend together as well as it does on his self titled album or unreal unearth it just feels like more stuff is happening. The songs I find myself drawn to are the more simple acoustic songs, nobody being my favourite from hoziers entire catalogue so it's ... read more

Labi Siffre - Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying
88

Gorgeous stripped back expressive songwriting, unique and soulful, strides made in folk, singer songwriting and LGBT representation within popular music

Eminem - Relapse
71

It's fine, technically impressive and Deja Vu might be Eminem's best track but it's long and bloated and tonally all over the place

Sam Cooke - Ain't That Good News
83

Some transcendent songs held back by a couple more forgettable tracks, vocals are obviously spot on from start to finish but songs like A Change is Gonna Come mixed in with songs that just don't feel fleshed out makes the album just barely miss that legend status

Geese - Getting Killed
91

Raw and stripped back in a way that lets the emotiveness of the vocals and instruments really pop, it's simple but has incredible depth, the tracks flow beautifully into each other which gives the album a very unified feeling
