it feels like phil elverum pours his heart into pretty much everything he does in his music, this album specifically feels like him thinking out loud late at night, reminiscing as well as reflecting on his past musically and personally. this vulnerability really just hits me and has me doing the same thing for myself mid song, add this on with the repetitiveness of the instrumental playing the same 2 chords for most of the song and you have me literally sobbing near the end, the repetition is ... read more
The lamb as effigy thrives with songs such as “man proposes” and “reiterations” that give off so much manic vulnerability from the rambling abstract spoken word vocals to schizophrenically shouted vocals, the instrumentals equally as manic constantly changing, playing clashing sounds all coming together to create what sounds like a nervous breakdown in music form.
My full thoughts on each album on this double LP are up on their individual pages but in conclusion as a whole i find The Powers That B to b a somewhat inconsistent listen, im not sure how much sense both of these albums make combined together it more-so feels tacked on to me and i enjoy both of these albums more separately rather than together. I thoroughly enjoyed Jenny Death but NOTM to me is just boring in comparison so it definitely brings this double album down for me and a 78 is the best ... read more
Death grips really thrive with this noise rock focused sound, the yelpy vocals work so well with this production and you end up getting an atmospheric hip hop experience through the use of noise created by distortion from guitars, synths in the background and the unique spacey mixing/recording of the drums. On GP specifically is a remarkable and shocking fusion of experimental hip hop and noise rock, it feels like the band is hitting us with everything they have and it gives off a sense of ... read more
The first half of The Powers That B, distinguished gentleman of colour on the moon is an album similar to a lot of what death grips have done before but with more of a focus on glitchy and non static production. The Bjork sample never gets old for me on here and I find myself looking forward to hearing how its used on all of these songs. I will say that a lot of the songs on the album sound alike, it feels like some of these tracks are just inferior versions of other songs on the album as they ... read more
a bit too lengthy with a few of the tracks in the middle feeling like they are doing more of the same thing, nonetheless this is a great live performance and while i prefer the pink songs on rock dream as a better performance, this is still really good and it would be an easy 100 if i actually saw it live.
Vulnerable introspective bars delivered with the conviction and energy they require over a wholly unique jazz rap production. Lula speaks on her struggles as a Black trans woman, her relationship, her experience as a new parent, and world issues, all of this done in a way that feels genuine and is coherent. I also love the funny, witty bars throughout this album, "I ain't poly, but fuck all y'all n****s."
this is just a whole load of bullshit and thats all i have to say about this album
peaceful and serene like the album cover with vocals that are gentle and pretty. this album would be perfect for walking around nature and gliding through life slowly taking everything in.

The production choices throughout this record make the album sound so modern and timeless, this truly could've been made today and nobody would bat an eye.
i get choked up just thinking about this album and i cant bear to give it a critical review, death is real.
idk what to really say about this, its ambitious for sure but it just consistently doesn't sound good after the first 5 tracks, its extremely corny in a way that makes me cringe constantly. the themes although tragic and sad just dont land on me at all and it just doesnt feel organic to me personally (no shade to shteppi i like her music usually) ASIDE FROM THE BEAUTIFUL HEARTWARMING OUTRO β€οΈ
every single one of these songs have something uniquely amazing going for them whilst all still being intoxicatingly catchy pop tunes. ALL BANGERS.
inconsistent but 4 your eyez only is the first J Cole song to actually make me feel something which was kinda unexpected
