Probably the most unique folk album I have ever listened too. Very much something to listen to around Halloween.
I feel like i've waited my whole life for this to come out and I was not disappointed. The album follows in the footsteps of Volume 1 with high energy instrumental and vocal performances as opposed to the more subdued Everything is Fine. That isn't too say every song is a frantic carnivalesque performance though, with "Small Stone" and "Letter From Death Row" displaying the same poetic lyricism of "Cocaine and Abel". Shut In is great.
To me this album feels like a memoir. It combines authentic lyrics with conversational vocals to create a deeply intimate experience. Every song (with the possible exception of 'The Cigarette Song') tells a unique story or outlines some inner thought. Although the guitar that saturates each song becomes repetitive, I think it actually helps to increase the already very personal feeling of the album.
