It would be above perfection if it was not for Half and Kickstand which I feel like don't really belong here. Except that every song is a masterpiece. The final riff on Like Suicide. The chorus on Limo Wreck. Cornell's singing on Head Down or on The Day I Tried To Live. BLACK HOLE SUN (let's praise the video clip too). You could say any track is your favorite and it would be valid (except the two I mentionned at the beginning, but Kickstand could be, I mean it's fun). Chris ... read more
To be honest I'm a little bit disappointed, I'm usually a big fan of short projects, I don't like when projects are filled with, well, fillers. I'm also a fan of Boldy James' music as well as Rome Streetz' music. So I was expecting something with the power of Daytona. It's far from it. The tracks are solid but there are only 6 and they're not all 10/10. I think I was expecting something a little bit ambitious. It's fine but not as fine as expected.
There is absolutely nothing surprising here, except maybe Open Arms (my favorite). Of course this is full of hits that are still played a little bit everywhere today so I guess that's why nothing is surprising. That said it's not bad and the fact the songs resonate with everyone makes it a really decent album.
I never listened to Billy Joel before that, my girlfriend made me. I don't regret it though, this album was great, only 9 songs but not a single bad one. Movin' Out is a wonderful intro, The Stranger is a great title track. My personnal favorite Get It Righ The First Time, I just love the vibe, very different from the rest of the songs.
I have no idea what he tried to do with this album. It's like every track is different but not a single one is memorable, worst, some of them are bad. One moment marked me : MR RECOUP because of the beat at the start, the weird distorded effect but then it cuts and Drake starts rapping. I don't have anything against Drake but he's pretty boring on this (he even says Mr RECOUP is his another nickname, nobody heard something like that ever and it doesn't even make sense with ... read more
Maybe it should have stayed one of these albums that are never released. Promised in 2006, the collaborative album between Nas and DJ Premier (Illmatic was mainly produced by him but it wasn't his album) is finally here. Nas is good, maybe not on the level he used us to recently on all these projets with Hit-Boy but the real problem : what the fuck are those beats ? GiT Ready, Pause Tapes, NY State of Mind Pt. 3, Shine Together all have terrible beats. I get they want to remind us of the ... read more
Easily best Conway's project since God Don't Make Mistakes. Actually I was surprised by how good this is. Tracks like Hell Let Loose or Don't Even Feel Real are so fucking good. It's a bit a long but there's no real bad tracks, he could just have cut a few without altering the album's quality. He's at his best when he's getting emotional and he does that throughout the whole album. Let's hope he stays on this path even though at some point he might ... read more
A really really great project, thanks albumoftheyear.org for this, I would've never learnt about this without this community. John Michel has a special voice, it really tells you to listen to him and the production is flawless. Don't Save Me might be the greatest intro I've heard this year.
I had my Maroon 5 era when I was a kid so I have a soft spot for this but even with that soft spot, it's pretty bad. Like I vibe to the song because it reminds me those times but I actually don't find them good except a few ones. Half of the songs are garbage, the other half is okay or was big hit in 2012. The purpose was obviously to make hits, so it's a success but as an album it's not great.
It's not the type of music I usually listen to but I gave it a shot and I don't regret it. It's not like I want to listen to it again and again but I didn't hate it and it definitely opened me more to this genre. It's not even a surprise to see Danny Brown on this, he really fits in. The album is really agressive but it's the purpose, so if you don't like that in music skip it... Actually no don't skip it, listen to it once because even though it's ... read more
This is a beautiful album in every way possible. The hommage paid to Trugoy all along the project is touching, and it begins in the intro with a really funny way to introduce every artist who participated to the album. Even though it's mostly about the death of their friend, De La Soul delivers a really joyful album, with sunny production and lyrics (you even have two songs titles with the word sun in it and the word summer in another one). A Quick 16 For Mama and Cabin in The Sky are huge ... read more
Obviously like everyone says this is good jazz rap instrumentals. Some of Lausse's performances were okay, it's better when he sings. Because sorry to say that but I can't really stand the way he raps. I'm a native french speaker and I speak english fluently (thanks to rap) but I don't understand a word he's singing or rapping. I can catch a few french words but it doesn't say much. And really his english accent is horrible to listen to I'm sorry. Usually ... read more
The work on this project is just insane, we always praised Prodigy and for good reason but on this album we have to recognize Havoc's talent, even after his friend's death he managed to release this and it sounds great. Of course the Alchemist has some part of responsability in the album's quality but the ''director'' is of course Havoc. I think it's one of Mobb Deep's best albums and it sure is a great way to pay hommage to Prodigy. His voice sounds ... read more
I like the vibe, when most of the rappers his age still act like they're 30 he's embracing the 40 years old time and making it a joyful moment. I don't know if I will remember this project in one year though.
I'm not a huge fan of Slick Rick's classic album first album but I still respect the influence of it. It was sure ahead of its time. VICTORY is the contraty at moments, it's too late. You have a few songs that are worth it, like Angelic or the uptempo tracks Come On Let's go and Cuz I'm Here. Documents is great but let's be honest it's mostly thanks to Nas. It's not the best comeback of course ... but also the man is 60 years old, he definitely has still ... read more
$EX APPEAL IS A BANGER IDK WHY PEOPLE ARE NOT ENJOYING THIS THING !!!
For real now, the intro and Ca$ino are great tracks but then you have 3 songs in a row which are really mid (I think it's the first time I think that of a song with Kendrick featured on it, it's even the worst song of the album). Then I am not a lyricist which is a highlight. And $ex Appeal. What the hell. I just can't stop moving my head over this beat. The rest of the album is great too, especially No Blame, ... read more
Weird album, and I realized I said this for Maps too, wich Segal produced so I guess I find his music weird. Weird but interesting enough that I don't get bored. It's not for everyone, not for me but it's some abstract hip-hop which is worth discovering.
I don't know maybe I'm just not a fan of the UK Hip-Hop, or I don't understand the true meaning of Dave's texts but I didn't feel something really special while listening to this album. It's definitely not bad, I really liked the chemistry with James Blake but I also find the other featurings kinda forgettable (except Tems because hey it's Tems). I don't mind the length of the songs which is not usual in this era, I kinda like it. But overall I always ... read more
