Nostalgic. This feels like being sick as a child felt like for me. Cozy and safe in a blanket, watching TV. But then you wake up all dizzy, sweaty and confused and you don't remember most of what had happened earlier.
It lacks some identity and can get quite homogeneous, I guess, but overall it feels nice, warm and familiar.
My go-to autumn record (aka: "my seasonal depression: the album."). Everything about this just screams rainy evening in NYC.
This is a very cohesive release, great for someone who likes to have a complete album experience. To truly enjoy it you have to be quite patient with it, repetative parts eventually have a great pay off at the end of most tracks.
Fave tracs: The New, Stella, Obstacle 2.
Hearing it for the first time in 2023, this still sounds incredibly refreshing to me. Truly heart-wrenching lyrics, her vocal delivery makes it all even more impactfull. She is able to write about the experiences common in womanhood in an incredibly unique way.
The only song I had some issues with was "Brand New City".
Even though I do miss Mitski's raw art-pop era, this is still a very compelling release. "My Love Mine All Mine" and "I'm Your Man" are some of my favorites and the writting throughout the record is still as impeccable as always.
Although, not as bad as I remember (there are some catchy moments here and there), it sounds REALLY generic. All the songs blend in together to the point that it eventually becomes annoying.
PS: I was forced to listen to this at work almost everyday for a month (don't even get me started how that happened...) I DIDN'T ENJOY IT AT ALL but I'd be lying if I said some of the songs here aren't still burned in the back of my mind.
