I adore this. It’s instantly nostalgic in a way only The Avalanches can produce. Very very catchy, upbeat and danceable. Has all the hallmarks of a great lead single
Yeah, fairly basic instrumentation but honestly Asa’s verses here are better than almost anything on 10K. Based subject matter and presented with a catchy chorus. Much to like!
These were unexpected and sonically different. But wow, the instant impact of that hook on Unoriginal! How did they go 6 for 6 with these singles? It’s truly a testament to their musical genius that transcends genres
It’s been six long years since frontman Asa Taccone’s reassuring voice starred on an Electric Guest song. In that time, the world has taken a beating. Well, at least we finally have some EG from the new world.
Our opener Till The Morning does its job setting the scene. It feels like they didn’t rush a thing. I get many vibes of 24-7 from their last album, but more layered - though it lacks some of the charm of the prior song’s chorus. The group have clearly put a lot of ... read more
This showcases Fred again..‘s ability to transform literally anything into a head bopping instrumental. This collaboration would have been completely unexpected had you listened to ‘adore u’ and ‘Jerkin’’ back to back but Amy’s vocals are blended well to fit Fred’s style.
I would argue that this is actually what lets it down most of all. I get little Amyl from this… when I really wanted to be berated by her accent I unfortunately feel this ... read more
It’s not particularly unique for Electric Guest, but a really solid comeback which I appreciate as a starved fan. Unpredictable hook - in a good way - but not as catchy as you want from a lead single.
The production is far from concise but Sycco takes the best bits and runs with them. Her live persona and personality shine through - but it’s very hit or miss. Having seen her live twice now, once as an opener for Glass Animals and once at a festival after becoming a fan, I can say she is truly as fun live as it seems she would be.
Aside from the one song from this album I knew of prior (Ripple), there were some really memorable tracks on Zorb, particularly Bad World, Monkey Madness and ... read more
I love those guys, if you ever have a chance to see them live - particularly at a festival - DO IT!!! However, this album leaves something to be desired.
The vocals and production is noticeably better on this album than their last. Unfortunately, a lot of the interesting ideas and variation between song structure are somewhat absent. I adore the opener and most of the singles are solid, but in the end they’re just worse versions of TILT tracks. On the other hand, it’s a consistent ... read more
A while ago my car broke down as I was listening to Speedracer… makes sense I guess.
Majordomo is a great album. Sure it doesn’t do anything groundbreaking, but why reinvent the wheel when you can paint it gold?
Love all the vocal inflections, love how unserious it all is, but I also hate how…. unserious it all is. There is plenty of real quality here; Weaponz, Speedracer, Spiders, Live Until You Die and others show great potential and they’re capturing their musical ... read more
This could’ve been a solid, if not slightly short, debut album. It’s sonically cohesive, there’s multiple standout tracks, and the flow is excellent. I am however glad they went more ambitious and definitely became more memorable on Mercurial World
And now, a story: I was ready to give this a terrible rating. 8 and a half hours at work, a horrific headache and a long drive home in the rain… and here’s the new album by perhaps my favourite artist in the whole world. My week had already started badly, I had this delusional belief that Magdalena Bay would feature on the BTV festival lineup over New Year’s. After all, it was in that precise situation two years earlier at Falls Festival where I stumbled into loving this ... read more
I expected it to be good, but this blew my expectations out of the water. Fantastic!
From start to finish it’s pure elegantly woven pop, bridged together fluently. I’m thrilled that multiple singles on this project finally hit me, with Teardrop and January truly gaining a new lease on life.
Where they let themselves down for me is that a few of the songs are a little samey, but they all work cohesively so it’s a pretty minor point. Telenova are such masters of their craft ... read more
One of the most ethereal-sounding indie pop albums and it really influenced the genre massively. The production is fantastic - especially the booming bass on display in Fantasy and Shelter - but at times it is far too minimal. xx has a fantastic knack of making the time fly, it’s a real shame that the lyrics are so forgettable and basic. It’s no surprise Intro is the best of the lot.
Overall, what a delightful, easy and satisfying listen this was!
