BULLDAWG is Kenny Mason's best showing since his debut album. It's not perfect, but I couldn't be much happier with it. Kenny loves mixing his genres together, and I think that variety of sound combined with consistent quality is what makes this project so great. When a album is as varied in sound as this, things can get messy and jarring fast, yet I don't think BULLDAWG ever becomes either throughout it' runtime. I think the switch ups all make sense, though ... read more
Drake has lost the plot. HABIBTI is horrible, and Rusty Intro might be the worst song he has ever made. If I wasn't enjoying spending time with my Drake-loving friend while listening to this project, I would have turned it off after the first song. The bar for this album's quality was in hell and Drake somehow went lower.
Best Tracks: N/A
Weakest Track: Rusty Intro
I... This might be one of the worst albums I've ever reviewed. It's embarrassing that Drake even considered releasing this. It's impressively bad. Songs like Cheetah Print and Princess were so awful that they made me change past scores of multiple terrible albums I've reviewed because I realized they had some redeeming qualities compared to this soulless, talent-void excuse of an "album."
Best Tracks: N/A
Weakest Track: Almost the entire album, make your pick.
My friend (a Drake fan) roped me into listening to the three albums he released tonight. I can't say I was surprised by this project's mediocrity, but I'm still shocked by how forgettable this release got at points. Sure, there are a few decent tracks here and there, but it became increasingly clear over it's runtime that Drake just has nothing left to say. Even the Kendrick Lamar beef that Drake couldn't stop bringing up for five seconds could light a fire under his ... read more
Oklou's choke enough is a VERY solid debut album. In the realm of alt pop it isn't anything all that crazy or ambitious, but it's a pretty and textured listen that's easy on the ears. There's some really fantastic songs on this project, and the highs alone make listening to this album worth it. Admittedly, this release does have a bad habit of just meandering around, almost like Oklou was unsure of what to do with a few of the songs on here. I don't think ... read more
For some reason this song has been sneaking into my rotation recently. Don’s vocal mixing is a bit odd and I suppose it’s a little generic, but it is just so damn catchy.
Raven is a wonderfully dreamy listen. Kelela's vocals and this project's production are magical, and they create a really memorable atmosphere fit for only the best of late-night drives. It's just so pretty and immersive across almost it's entire runtime. Sure, it can drag a bit at points, but it's dull parts barely hinder this album's consistency as a whole. I wouldn't necessarily say that many songs pop out at me on here, but Raven is ultimately a very ... read more
Kenny Mason's RUFFS is par for the course when it comes to his ability to put a project together. I recently listened to his debut album and thought it was fantastic, but other than that release he has just not been able to put together a consistent listen to save his life. There are fantastic songs all across this mixtape, but there's a hefty amount of forgettable and dull tracks too. The good definitely outweighs the bad, but this tape isn't anything incredible as a whole. I ... read more
God Save the Three is a pretty fun collaborative effort from glaive and kurtains. I kind of wish they leaned heavier into the rock side of this album because the songs where they did so were far and away the best tracks on here, but I'm still happy with this album. It's consistently enjoyable despite the mixing can be a bit rough at points and the sound being all over the place. glaive's vocals and kurtain's vocals mesh very well together, and the beats on this project ... read more
I don't hate Sugar Girl, and I actually don't mind the trap and plugg sounds on Little Simz, but overall this EP is just pretty dull. I appreciate that she tried something new, but this project is a bit of a mess.
Best Track: Game On
Weakest Track: Open Arms
More of this please Tommy! I know it gets less streams but it's better than just biting Brent's style.
Room on Fire is just a magical listen at so many points. It's like a brief rush of adrenaline and I love it for that. This album's catchy as hell, both due to it's snappy choruses and bursts of colorful riffs. It has a real chaotic and breakneck feel, and I think that tone fits the subject-matter of this album beautifully. I do think the first half is a bit stronger than the second overall, but this project is just so tight and consistent that it's few lows really only ... read more
Ghostholding is a pretty awesome... Venture... From Jane Remover. It's first half is a bit shaky at points, but the deeper you go the better it gets. Jane's voice is incredible as always on this album, and it just fits so well over this project's fuzzy, all-consuming guitars and punchy drums. I seriously can't decide whether I think this release's shoegaze production, vulnerable lyricism, or Jane's versatile and emotive vocals are the highlight of this album, but I ... read more
If you've been following me for a while, you probably know that I view Kenny Mason as the king of inconsistency, so I wasn't expecting anything too amazing going into Angelic Hoodrat. However, now that I've actually heard the album, I can say with full confidence that Angelic Hoodrat is fantastic! Sometimes the mixing can sound a bit unintentionally muddy, and there may be one or two weaker cuts here and there, but this project still surprised me with how consistently high ... read more
KNEECAP's sophomore album FENIAN is an improvement over their debut in every single way. Now, I'm not blown away by this project, but it has plenty of bangers and some really interesting political commentary. The grimy hip house production is without a doubt one of the main highlights of this album, and compared to KNEECAP's last outing, the beats on here are so much more polished and layered. Though, that's not the only area of improvement on this album. In fact, I'd ... read more
After five long years, Isaiah Rashad has finally returned to the limelight with his third album IT'S BEEN AWFUL, and I think it's pretty great. It's as smooth and introspective as any of his past releases, but this project's got an added layer of maturity and an rnb twang that makes it stand out when compared to them. Also, while they're not the ultimate highlight of this album, I do really like the catchy choruses on here, and I think that Isaiah has finally gotten ... read more
Cilvia Demo is my personal favorite release in Isaiah Rashad's relatively small discography, as it's his most concise and consistent project front to back. This EP is filled with incredible lofi beats and even better verses from Isaiah himself. His honest and blunt reflection all throughout this release is just so, so captivating. I'd say it led to some career highlights like Heavenly Father and Shot You Down. There's definitely a couple tracks on this project that I ... read more
George Clanton's Slide sounds like a view that take's your breath away. It may not be perfect, but it really is a magical album. George's deep voice is so unique, and his vocals on this project have more than enough passion and emotion to keep the listener captivated. However, with that said, the production on this album takes center-stage. It's absolutely hypnotizing, and it creates a really summery and memorable atmosphere. Sure, the mixing on here can occasionally sound ... read more
