Don't Be Dumb isn't anywhere close to a crowning jewel in A$AP Rocky's discography, but it's still a very welcome entry in it. It's a bit all over the place, as to say it's sound is a little messy would be the understatement of the century, but that's sort of what makes this album as great as it is. That's not to say it's scatterbrained genre-usage NEVER blows back in it's face, but it works way more often than it doesn't. There's ... read more
While I love Nas, and I've enjoyed some of DJ Premier's stuff in the past, Light-Years just does not impress me. There's definitely some diamonds in the rough on it, but I'd say the majority of this album's offerings are quite unremarkable. The bars can be a bit hit-or-miss, but honestly they're still the best and most consistent part of this album. While Nas doesn't offer a career-defining performance on it, his flows and lyricism are still very enjoyable at ... read more
These two songs are great but wish they’d stop releasing so many singles. At this point just release the album earlier.
While I think LONG.LIVE.A$AP is the weakest release in A$AP Rocky's semi-self-titled trilogy, it's still a fantastic entry in his discography. While a little more commercial than his debut, it's still a wonderfully cloudy and atmospheric listen with only a few rough patches that just ever so slightly break the immersion. However, beyond the dark euphoria of this album's intoxicating atmosphere, this project is pretty great on a technical level. Rocky's flows are awesome ... read more
Sure, Illmatic is hip hop perfection, but Nas' It Was Written, his sophomore effort, is far from a project to write off. His lyricism on this album, with few exceptions, is as incredibly vivid and captivating as you'd expect from someone of his reputation. I could point to many of this album's fantastic beats or Nas' cold-blooded flows as being the ultimate highlights of this project, but similar to Illmatic, I feel that Nas' grim and witty storytelling is what shines ... read more
The Great American Bar Scene is yet another album of Zach Bryan's that I truly enjoyed despite my general disdain for most country releases. Sure, it's incredibly bloated and tapers off in quality during the middle of it's runtime, but both ends of this album are very strong, very heartfelt, and very memorable. Zach Bryan clearly knows how to write a catchy tune with profound emotion, and there's plenty of tracks on here that serve as examples of this. Though, beyond just ... read more
I'm pretty optimistic for the album, especially after giving this single a couple listens.
I meant to give Love Spells a listen last year, but I suppose late is better than never, especially since The Love I Showed You Was Yours To Keep is a truly fantastic EP. Love Spells' wispy vocals are to die for, and while I love this project's production, the melancholic vocals are probably it's strongest component. Though, with that said, the beats on here are nothing to scoff at. Their cloudy and dream-like nature gives so much more depth to this lovesick outing. While I ... read more
As much as I enjoy Ghais Guevara's music, I think the overall quality of his releases has gone down hilll as of late. That's not to say there aren't gems on his recent projects, and there's definitely a couple on this EP, but overall, I feel like his bars and beats have gotten a bit stale and unambitious. A Quest To Self-Mythologize is fine, but it's not really all that great. I do have hope that Ghais can come back swinging with another project further down the road, ... read more
ORQUÍDEAS PARTE 2 is a pretty fantastic deluxe, and I can't believe I forgot to review it when it released. Almost every track on it holds up to the original album, and songs like Adicto would have been among the best on that project.
Best Track: Adicto
Weakest Track: Como Debe Ser
Thanks to the game Dispatch, I discovered the song Feel the Way I Do which is just an absolute banger, and eventually I thought "why not listen to the project it's on? It could all be just as good!" Usually, expectations and hopes like that aren't entirely fulfilled in albums, but for the most part, I actually think Incubator manages to stay consistently quality throughout it's runtime. It's nothing stunning, but it's got some dreamy synthpop bops that are ... read more
I was ready to give up on Conway's music following the incredibly disappointing Slant Face Killah, but You Can't Kill God with Bullets has seemingly brought life back to his flows. Now, I don't think this project is INCREDIBLE, as it's extremely bloated and it can lose the plot from time to time. However, with that said, it's still a very solid outing, and it's certainly a cut above Conway's more recent releases. It's highs alone make a full listen ... read more
I was expecting redveil to improve following his last project, but I wasn't expecting the improvement to be so drastic. sankofa is easily redveil's most ambitious and inspired project to date. The instrumentals are buttery enough to melt in your ears, and redveil brings a level of heart and focus to his bars that's just captivating. Also, while it's not the focus of this album, I love that redveil tries his hand at singing and does a mostly great job at it. It adds yet ... read more
β‘ might be Jane Remover's best release yet, and that says a lot considering how fantastic their discography already is. Sure, it's not an album, but I don't this EP has a single weak track. It's just banger after banger until the very end. There's a lot of ways I could describe this project, but to keep it simple, it sounds like how it's cover looks. Everything about this release just screams "late night drive." It's wonderfully glitchy and hazy, ... read more
I've recently been playing a game called Dispatch (if you haven't played it just know it's a great game) and it's soundtrack really caught my attention. There were a couple songs on it that I just couldn't get out of my head, and one just so happens to be on this album. Kissing Someone Else is an absolutely brilliant song, as it's spacey synths and airy guitars are cradled firmly by some really impressive vocals from Caroline Kingsbury. However, with that said, no ... read more
