Better Lovers - Highly Irresponsible
89

I like this. A fucking lot.

It took a few tries to get into Highly Irresponsible because the first track, Lie Between the LInes, goes so freaking hard. Gotta be in the mood to feel like the dude on the front of the album. I'm going to write more in a bit, but need to listen to it in my car first and see if I break my time record to get home from work... nope... oh well, traffic sucks but this album makes city driving bearable.

Time for an in depth review. This album just keeps ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - CHROMAKOPIA
76

Tyler, The Creator complains about creating a child: the album.

Chromakopia feels like a tribute to Tyler's superior albums. On its own merit the album is kind of rough, doesn't always flow well, but is innovative to be sure. The second half is MUCH stronger than the first half.

The first three tracks are strong. The transition from Rah Tah Tah to Noid was silky smooth. Actuality, the transitions between most songs are thoughtful and smooth.

First half of Noid reminds me of Gary ... read more

Spys4Darwin - Microfish
91

I have a weird connection with this Spys4Darwin EP. This came out while I was in college and one day I happened to be listening to the song Dashboard Jesus on the way to an exam. I subsequently nailed the test, even though I was certain I was going to fall walking in. After that, Dashboard Jesus then became my official pre-exam anthem. Seriously. Even today when I listen to Dashboard Jesus I'm instantly ready to crank on some scantrons.

So, aside from my weird connection what's up ... read more

Hatebreed - Under the Knife
48

The production quality on this album kept me from taking this band seriously for 20 years. Seriously, I heard this in 1996 and my first reaction was well, don't have to listen to that shit any more. It was quite a long time before I listened to their other releases...and that's a shame. 20 year old me would've eaten this shit up if it didn't sound like it was recorded in a dented coke can that smells like weed.

Judeline - Bodhiria
66

Impressive LP from Judeline. Remarkable depth and maturity for a young pop artist's debut album.

The comparisons to Rosalia are undeniable but completely reasonable given the impact of Rosalia on the latin pop scene. I liked the more energetic cuts on the album like INRI and JOROPO the most on my first run through. Some of the slower songs (e.g. luna roja, Heavenly) dragged on the album a bit but weren't dealbreakers.

The production is fantastic; the tracks sound futuristic and ... read more

Amyl and the Sniffers - Cartoon Darkness
74

Cartoon Darkness is a filthy album. Not perfect, but perfectly punk.

Listening to Amyl and the Sniffers is like the feeling you get after scratching a mosquito bite - relief while somehow simultaneously worsening the itch. I fucking love this quote from Amy Taylor (taken from wikipedia) "In Australia we call poppers Amyl. So you sniff it, it lasts for 30 seconds and then you have a headache – and that's what we're like!"

I was tempted to cut this album after ... read more

Laura Marling - Patterns in Repeat
60

If this album was a color, it would be beige. Nothing special about it but somehow it ends up on nearly every minivan in existence.

These intimate singer-songwriter albums are out of my wheelhouse. I would normally just sample the album and move right along but the high critic praise of this album, and pretty much all of Laura Marling's work, made this album a must listen.

The two biases I bring to this album are 1) I love drums and percussion in albums and 2) I'm never really ... read more

Enforced - A Leap Into The Dark
68

It is always good to start the day with some face melting thrash from Enforced. That said, this EP doesn't establish a tone that differentiates itself from the LP War Remains released last year, so my enthusiasm was dampened a bit. Seems like these might be deep cuts that didn't make the album? Deafening Heartbeats is definitely my favorite cut.

The Dare - What's Wrong With New York?
45

You're Invited is one of the most insufferable songs released this year.

The rest of the album is cringe, but generally the beats are fine. All Night is probably the best track, but nothing here is going on my end of year playlist.

The Alchemist - The Genuine Articulate
65

Favorite track: MInnesota Fats. The rest kind of fade into the background.

71

Undeath is kind of a stupid name for a death metal band. I'm just going to say it.

As for the album, this is straight forward death metal, of which there are plenty of comparisons. I think I like this slightly less than 200 Stab Wounds and Darkest Hour but more than Civerous. as far as 2024 death metal albums are considered, so 71 seems about right. All of these songs kind of sound the same to be completely honest, but I kind of like consistency when the album is short like this one, ... read more

Molly Tuttle - Into The Wild
69

This isn't bad for a bluegrass EP.

Four songs (Into the Wild, Getaway Girl, Here in California, Stranger Things) are mid-range traditional bluegrass. Nothing innovative but solid tunes. Then there's the covers, White Rabbit and Good 4 U. I liked Good 4 U, but I'm not very familiar with Olivia Rodrigo's version so not sure if it is a real departure or just the same song with some acoustic mandolins/guitars/banjos. White Rabbit, well, I'm not sure anyone could top ... read more

The Airborne Toxic Event - Glory
49

The Airborne Toxic Event turned out to be a false alarm. No toxicity, Just mediocre mid-tempo indie rock here.

I really like the album cover. I wish the album matched my enthusiasm for the cover.

Like: Nothing...apathy wins

Meh: Our Own Thunder Road. Hole in my Heart, Frank Pigg, Jenny, Note to Self, It Never Happened At All, Glory, The Walk

Dislike: So You Think You Know The Difference?

Escuela Grind - Dreams on Algorithms
75

This new Escuela Grind is a bit of a one trick pony, but 30 minutes is the perfect length for this album. 30 minutes of face punching metal seems like what a Dr would prescribe for an old school diagnosis, like general malaise.
"Take one Escuela Grind per day."
"Do not operate heavy machinery or operate a vehicle unless you can do so while rocking your head violently back and forth."

Anciients - Beyond the Reach of the Sun
68

I definitely like this album, but I wanted to like it so much more than I did.

I've been attempting to listen to this album for a few months and finally made it through the whole thing. Main issue I have is there's very little that stands out to me. I mean, this is a solid prog metal album with great drumming, uptempo guitar riffing and bass (for the most part), and above average vocals. But aside from this sort of generic analysis, there's not a lot for me to sink my teeth ... read more

Yeat - LYFESTYLE
45

Yeat released 62 minutes of the least memorable rap I've heard this decade. It just exists to disrupt the air. Boring beats mixed with egregious autotune that should be out of style by now.

I wish I could hear what you guys hear but I can't catch the vibe...production just sounds lazy. Every track sounds relatively the same. Maybe if this was shorter and some of the fat was cut... but maybe not.

Funk Assault - Paces of Places
65

boots and pants and boots and pants and boots and pants and boots and pants and boots and pants and boots and pants and boots and pants and boots and pants and boots and pants and boots and pants and

Alestorm - No Grave But the Sea
82

Pirate metal FTW.

No Grave but the Sea might be my favorite Alestorm album, in close competition with Curse of the Crystal Coconut. Alestorm is a band that needs to be experienced live. After you see them live, all this cheesy, cringy shit will make total sense.

Like Crystal Coconut, No Grave but the Sea is a solid album front to back. I mean, his could you not live bangers like Mexico and Fucked with an Anchor. I should probably rate it higher but I do feel like there is a ceiling here, ... read more

Jerry Cantrell - I Want Blood
78

Hearing new Jerry Cantrell scratched an itch for new AIC I didn't know I had.

While nothing can ever top the dual vocal harmonies of Layne and Jerry in AIC, it is good just to hear some AIC-like music. Reminds me how stellar Cantrell is as a musician. I'll agree with some other reviewers that the songs on the album are somewhat similar. As such, songs I might like might change from time to time. However, the overall album is strong and I could see throwing this on every once in a ... read more

Jean Dawson - Glimmer of God
91

I was beginning to think that this week was a wash but Glimmer of God saved the day.

Like: Darlin', Black Sugar, Play Dead, Houston, Die For Me, Slow Heavy Ecstasy, The Boy and the Swan, You're Bleeding Everywhere, P4IN, Bubba, Electric Children, Kollapse

Meh: Paranoid Echo, Murcielago, 200 Cigarettes

"@llamaqwerty feel like it's pretty generic metal. Weak nu metal i guess. I saw these guys open for good bands a bunch back in the day and they never impressed me all that much, so went with the most generic typology i could think of at the time i reviewed it."

"@OnsPascal Everyone digests music differently. Like I said, I respect the artistic merit here, just not for me, probably for the exact reason that you provide here. Doesn't mean I shouldn't share my thoughts."
On HomeSession3's review of Soen - Reliance
"@HomeSession3 nice review. Agree on a lot of points, and I like the straightforward alt-metal sound, but found it a bit conservative given their talent. I wish they would lean just a bit more into their prog roots and juice the instrumentals a bit."

"@Kendrickgoatedg they were contemporaries... but yeah, pretty close in sound. I think they were trying to hit a nu metal version of soundgarden. Maybe a bit better musically but a bit generic."

On DiceBloke's review of (Hed) P.E. - DETOX
"the self-titled album is much better. The lyrics are still a liability but the music has a lot more originality and funk to it. There were some good musicians in the original line-up, but they're all gone by now. It is tough to put the self-titled album in any one genre, but this album is kind of a one-trick pony."
On DiceBloke's review of (Hed) P.E. - DETOX
"Lyrics have been a problem with this band for its whole existence."
On Inherus - Beholden
"I have to be honest with you, XsVrits...I don't know what you're trying to convey with your statement here."
On The Lemon Twigs - Everything Harmony
"Yeah, maybe t's not so much the harmonies as it is the actual lead vocals remind me of a mix of weird Al and Tiny Tim. The harmonies are actually decent, but that only exacerbates the weak lead vocals. Maybe that's my issue with it. I don't know, every time I turn this on to try to analyze it I just get a visceral reaction to something in the vocals."
