Elliott Smith - Elliott Smith
91

Very consistent. One of the better singer-songwriters of his era, and adds to the collection of Indie Folk that I really enjoy. Southern Belle has that type of crescendo that gets to me, and The Biggest Lie is absolutely beautiful. To be honest, the entire album is beautiful from start to finish. Does not peak as high as Either/Or, however it is definitely one of his best.

Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica

REVIEW 100!
If your definition of THE MOVIE is The Room, then I think THE ALBUM is Trout Mask Replica. I don't think I can review this album like it's a normal album. It's not when you listen to it by any means. The "hook" to the album is Frownland, which does nothing more than prime your ears for the rest of the album. It's immediately followed up by poetry from the Captain himself, and then throws you directly into Dachau Blues. It's weird, it's eccentric, but oddly enough the more ... read more

This album is definitely my AOTY so far and I can't really see anything surpassing it. The production is insanely good, the inspirations range from The Microphones to Godspeed and maybe even Swans. Ambient noise and drone crescendos in Storge, which is my favourite off the album, and the closing 3 tracks following are absolutely beautiful let downs from the peak. (Not to say that these tracks let down in any way). I strongly recommend anyone to listen to this, especially lovers of post ... read more

julie - pushing daisies

Like other shoegaze revival bands, I've quite enjoyed julie. The fuse with grunge and their noisy feeling is intriguing, and the way they all put it together on pushing daisies is enjoyable to listen to. The interludes between the songs do work with the feeling of the album and help with cohesivity. Definitely worth the short listen, and has been on several of my playlists since release.

What an EP. Saw this in the Black Country, New Road subreddit and figured I'd give it a listen. Post-Punk from the UK really has given a great deal of amazing music recently. Sax on here goes insanely hard especially in Kakistocracy. Lead singer's vocals remind me of Isaac Wood, and the overall feel of the band really does remind me of pre-2022 BCNR or Slint. Crazy good stuff and I hope these guys release a full length album.

Huge fan of their EP and first two albums, although not as good in parts, there are some songs on here that absolutely sit with the rest of Godspeed's best. motherfucker=redeemer (cont.) definitely hangs with Storm/Static, East Hastings, Mladic and Moya in terms of the peak of what this band has put out. Very solid all around, and I find myself coming back to it frequently.

The Antlers - Hospice

As a big indie rock and post rock fan, this album is right up my alley. I also love concept albums so paying attention to the lyricism behind the instrumentation has given me another level to appreciate this album by. It's not perfect by any means, however it's still very good. Buildups and climaxes are definitely present, and there are some tracks on here that gave me goosebumps, like when the horns come in in Sylvia, and the final chorus in Two. Epilogue is also one of the most emotionally ... read more

This album definitely ticks off a bunch of boxes of what makes good indie rock. The music is great however I'm not feeling too much emotion behind the lyrics. It's definitely worth a listen and I'll be coming back to this now and again. I think the industry plant label is valid, but as other reviewers have said, it doesn't really mean too much when the music is good.

The pivot of King Gizzard from psych to a more heavier and thrash metal sound wasn't something I was expecting going through their discography but they manage to pull it off quite well. The message is pretty obvious in the first four tracks especially, they pull it off quite well without it being abrasive or cringeworthy. They're slowly becoming one of my favourite bands. Would recommend a listen all the way through.

Even with albums like F#, Skinny Fists, and even Slow Riot, the opening track "Mladic" is possibly the best thing the band has put out. The longer tracks on this LP carry, as the shorter ones inbetween don't really seem to go anywhere, although they're still an enjoyable listen. Everything I've heard this band put out just seems to be ideal post-rock.

Sufjan Stevens - Javelin

There isn't a bad song on here quite honestly. Gorgeous songs, and folk that's enjoyable and easy on the ear. Easily one of the best if not the best album of 2023. If you take a scale between Illinoise and Carrie and Lowell, Javelin belongs nearly right in the middle. Would definitely recommend.

Liked this quite a bit, although slightly less than Come In. Very strong very good lo-fi noise pop. All of the tracks seem to blend into each other but I quite enjoyed Melt a Bed and Late Time Stroll. Would recommend a listen front to back, it's less than half an hour and if you liked Come In this will be right up your alley.

The Smiths but better (in my personal opinion). Vocalist is one of the strongest I've ever heard, and it's just really aurally pleasing Dream Pop. Fantastic album and I'll be sure to check out their other albums. The instrumentation on "I Won" in particular is also great.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Slow Riot for New Zerø Kanada E.P.

Been very into gy!be recently, and have decided to explore more of their discography. This EP is insanely good drone, and it shows. The feel is more similar to F# A# infinity than Skinny Fists, especially in the second track where the man reads out his poetry about the end of days (Iron Maiden lyrics, lol). The crescendos are epic, and it just fits the bill of the ideal post rock EP. One of the best things I’ve ever listened to.

Never was really into spoken word before listening to this album. The callbacks to Nonagon Infinity are plentiful and fun. Insane instrumentation, very psychedelic, and ultimately represents everything I enjoy about prog rock. The third suite feels nearly Radiohead-esque, as the Han-Tyumi tracks really give it a feel that I've only found on Kid A and OK Computer. Amazing album.

Kinda like Black Country, New Road, but it seems to just be three guys and the lyrics are even more nonsense and it's incredibly whimsical? The exemplification of the whimsiness appears to be "Infinite Jim", however the strength of instrumentation is quite clear on "Mr Worry + Understanding the Linux Kernel". Lots of musical references in here too. A cover of When You Sleep, playing All Star by Smash Mouth at the end of the record, just musicians having fun with the music. ... read more

Very heavy and psychedelic rock off this album. Lots of tracks that remind me heavily of Nonagon Infinity, so I can see this as sort of a precursor to their magnum opus. Love distortion and lo-fi production as evidenced by my review of Come In by Weatherday. This album doesn't do it quite as well, but it does it in a slightly different way that is almost as loveable. I'll definitely have to come back to this LP later in the year, but as the first album released in 2024 that I've listened to, it's a great start to a hopefully great year.

Great compilation album. I've tried to rate this many times but a lot of the songs I couldn't quite put a finger on how much I liked them. However from front to back the psychedelic and electronic feels combine to produce some of the most ethereal sounds I've ever heard. Combined with Tender Buttons and The Noise Made By People, Broadcast has some impressive work.

One of the better produced albums I've ever heard, and I see why a lot of diehard gizz fans have this at their #1. There's always another instrument to pick out of the mix and focus on, and everything just seems like it's exactly where it's supposed to be. I quite like Crumbling Castle and Tetrachromacy, they are definitely the best that this album has to offer. Really solid listen and I'll be sure to revisit.

EDIT (Jan 9/23): 91 -> 92, calling Crumbling Castle a 100.
