One of my least favorite trends in hip hop recently is the "epic" and "grand" elements added to songs, usually as guitars or an orchestral-like sound. Specifically when it's used to make a rap song feel more important through other genres than actually companioning it to the genre itself. It embodies the idea that rap music is just simple and unimportant music compared to everything else and it pisses me off. This is my main issue with this album, and by extension his ... read more
As someone who admittedly likes Harry's solo stuff, I was expecting to be relatively nicer to this, at worst maybe find it whatever, but no this is like impressively annoying. Honestly a little more creative and dynamic than his good albums, but Harry isn't good enough to put it to use so he just makes a bad pop album while trying to be more artistic. Feels like he's trying to be David Bowie when he was in his sellout era, except he's not David Bowie, not even in his sellout ... read more
Was pretty fun when it released and there's some songs that are among his best, but some of this hasn't aged too well. Most of it is fine save for "i was just thinking" being surprisingly awful on relisten, and you can tell Gunna was hungrier than usual because of the beef, but a lot of this is more passive than his other stuff. He's made a lot more engaging albums before and even after this (both DS4EVER and One Of Wun are albums I'd call great) and I feel like ... read more
Thick Of It pisses me off not just because of the annoying drama surrounding it but because I though Trippie would save it a little but he sounds worse than KSI on it somehow. He's dropping good music outside of this and mgk I promise. But that and low both sound like the most drowned out commercial music except none of it is ever going to be listened to outside of people like me being morbidly interested in listening to it. Low is like a little worse but barely. They're both annoying.
I definitely respect the effort of this album. As a natural progression of black midi's recent break up, this is a high energy and interesting listen of what is basically a character study for Greep's persona here, but something about this just doesn't hit for me. I didn't care for neither of the singles he released beforehand and still don't here. And although there's some occasionally solid moments and a couple songs I do like overall, I can't say I really ... read more
