AND I THOUGHT SCARING THE HOES WOULD BE THE BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Kikuo is a genius, man. Even the most vocaloid-repulsed of my friend group enjoy a song like Hole-Dwelling. I don't know if I'd call this better than the iconic hits off of 3, or a better album overall than 6, but god damn is Kikuo Miku 7 a hit. AND THE MAJORITY OF IT DOESN'T EVEN USE MIKU!!! A change of pace from his prior projects, Mo Qingxian, a chinese vocaloid, is used instead, giving this whole album a different vibe. If ... read more
JPEGMAFIA might just be the best producer in rap right now. I know people joke about the mixing and all, but this whole project being made on a single machine is a big change for Peggy, and unlike Human After All, this limitation does not hold him back at all. You never know what creative sample is coming next, from some random disco record he dug up, to a freaky ass Japanese commercial, to a notification sound that jumpscared me on my first listen.
Oh, and Danny Brown too!!! God, Danny Brown ... read more
Okay, that's far too many gecs now, we have to draw the line somewhere
A marked improvement over their debut album, 100 gecs, who I am still convinced to this day are the twins from How to Train Your Dragon given unrestricted access to FL Studio, continue to revolutionize the idea of what music can be. I've always been a believer that if a song can make you laugh, then it deserves the same praise as a song that leaves you in awe at its beauty, or rips your heart out. They all provide a form of ... read more
Oh hey, look at that, I can actually comment on this album now!
I had so much hope, man. Seeing the baby aesthetic killed off Taylor Swift Reputation style, I thought we would witness an artist grow and develop with the times. And... well it's better than Crybaby at least? Yeah maybe that Reputation comparison was a bad omen. This album substitutes repulsion for complete and utter boredom, but even with the childlike facade vanquished, you won't find a hint of maturity on this album. Death ... read more
absolutely yaejing out rn >:3
Had a really fun time with this one! Very simple to vibe to, it's nice to have a listen with less baggage every once and a while. Usually when it comes to Korea, big bands of in-your-face pop/rap singers come to mind, but there's a lot of underground independent projects out there if you go looking for them. Cutesy glitchy electronic house stuff clicks very well for me, but I get it if it doesn't for others, the first half is definitely a lot stronger than the ... read more
I mean, yeah, duh. Do I even need to explain this one?
While it may not be too influential on the greater sound of the musical world, I'd call it one of the most influential albums on the state of America in general. So much has already been said about TPaB that I'm having a hard time trying to find anything else to add to the table honestly!
Best Tracks: All of them, but The Blacker The Berry is my absolute FAAAAAVORITE
Worst Track: Idk, Hood Politics maybe??? It's hard to compare 10s but ... read more
SNAIL'S HOUSE REVIEW MARATHON: PART 8
It just randomly shot up from cool 50s to 90°F in the middle of fucking APRIL, so there's no better time to review the warmer counterpart to Snö! I remember being on vacation in Florida during the album rollout for this, so it always hits whenever it's reeeeeally humid out. I was actually in the middle of Disney World when the first single Somnolent released, so that might be why it still stands as my favorite on the album. Something about the ... read more
SNAIL'S HOUSE REVIEW MARATHON: PART 7
YEAAAAAAAAAAH BABEYYYYY THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
No but seriously tho. I adore this album with all my heart. This was around the time when I really started keeping up with Snail's House releases instead of him just being some guy that I heard about every once and a while, and wow what a perfect time to hop on board.
The title track Snö (Intro) is already getting me emotional just on a simple ... read more
SNAIL'S HOUSE REVIEW MARATHON: PART 6
I truly think that if Ordinary songs 3 & 4 were combined into one album it would be considered one of his absolute best. Both quaint little EPs on their own, I feel like the short length is the only thing keeping people from realizing just how strong the production and progression are on these anything-but-ordinary songs.
Welcome and Hello I would get mixed up for the longest time, very polite of him to greet us twice in a row. I think these are the ... read more
SNAIL'S HOUSE REVIEW MARATHON: PART 5
And hear we see the birth of a brand new series, Alien Pop! Does it really count as a Chekhov's gun if I only just mentioned it 3 reviews ago? I wasn't joking about the Splatoon Piss Gargle (tm) becoming an iconic staple of his style. There is actually no Vocaloid used in the making of these EPs, as the otherworldy vocals are created using Ujico's own voice! Just heeeeeavily edited in post, obviously.
Can I just say that Invation is a rad song? Cause it ... read more
SNAIL'S HOUSE REVIEW MARATHON: PART 4
The Ordinary Songs do not stop coming! Not counting the singles, this one's actually the shortest project he's ever made, so hey, makes things easy for me~
Starting off strong with Good Day, we can see the jazzy roots that inspired him to become a musician in the first place finally take shape, his production skills already showing a huge improvement. All of the samples, from the arcade sounds, to those little clinks, to that random anime sword shwing, it ... read more
SNAIL'S HOUSE REVIEW MARATHON: PART 3
HAHAHAHA LOOK EVERYONE FUNNY HOT MILK
Yeahhhhh in a way that song has gotten so big it eclipses the rest of the album. Which is a shame, cause there's some cute tracks on here!
This one starts off with... an actual well constructed introduction? Wow, I... kinda love this one honestly! It's short, but the way the little kalimba notes start of distant, before slowly getting closer until they form a chord in unison, and then the transition into White Day... ... read more
SNAIL'S HOUSE REVIEW MARATHON: PART 2
I coulda sworn Ordinary Songs 2 was next, but here is Love Story! What a sneaky little project.
Anyways, we begin with an intro that... tries its best! Poor thing's not even in tune... yeah, I'm not sure I'm gonna count this one in the overall rating, it only really exists to parallel the outro. Now for our real start, Bitter Sweet! What a pulse this one has, certainly the peppiest on the EP. Very danceable, and the little chipmunk vocal chops that were ... read more
SNAIL'S HOUSE REVIEW MARATHON: PART 1
I'm so thankful for Snail's House for getting me into music as a whole all those years ago. Before that I just listened to like... the Undertale OST. Which was fun, but also a sad way to live. I've been introduced to so many new joys and experiences through music, so before I really get into the nitty gritty of the reviewing world, I want to make a tribute to my hero.
Since there's no Kirara EP on here for some reason (I might have to get on that...) I ... read more
Hey, this one comes with a cool movie attached! A movie that quite literally made me vomit on my first watch, but a movie nonetheless! I can at least appreciate this one in the same way I can appreciate the Harry Potter movies over the books, cause at least other people who aren't anthropomorphizations of literal trash are involved in the project. As for the music itself, it's really just standard fair for Mel with slight improvements here and there. I don't have much else to add, so why don't ... read more
Aight, I'm gonna be honest. Melanie Martinez is and always has been a MASSIVE discomfort for me. I was never a part of that 2015-2016 Mel TOP Halsey side of tumblr, and thank fuck I wasn't, not only cause the Spirit Phone side was way cooler, but also I truly feel bad for anyone who saw themselves in such a rotten person. Twenty One Pilots were able to evolve as artists, and at least Halsey is pretty inoffensive, but I have not felt a single shred of maturity or authenticity throughout ... read more
