Ehhh there are a few alright songs on here. I had been hyped up for this band and this really didn't do anything for me. At best its a solid punk album, at worst it gets a bit grating. Not for me
This album appeals to an early 2000's sensibility that I adore. Harkening back to americana pop punk and adding the flare of a brass section, the instrumentation is so nostalgic it hurts. It feels like wandering into a dusty bar during sunset on a Saturday afternoon and accidentally discovering a local band that has the whole crowd singing along.
This album is directly up my alley. I adore GCJ and this album represents all the reasons why. Jazzy, funky, rocking, beautiful. I don't know what else to say. It's gorgeous. Must listen and easily in my top 5 for 2024.
I am working my way back through Aes's discography and I have to say, I overlooked this one when it first came out. In a year where so many solid underground projects were releasing, I initially took this as "Welp! Another pretty solid Aesop Rock project!" and moved on. This is tied with The Impossible Kid for my favorite Aes album. I'll admit, I am biased. I just graduated from Mechanical Engineering school and so the references and aesthetic of this album appeal directly to me. Still, the storytelling on this is an absolute gem and Living Curfew had me FLOATING on my drive to work. I also think Bermuda has the catchiest hook on any album by the wordsmith wizard.
