Thank you Aes, I needed this. Not to get too deep into it on an album review but this year has been a nightmare for me. I've barely had time for new music and have had my mind on other things, so imagine my surprise when I received an email with a link to a new album by my favorite living rapper on my birthday! I think this feels the most like a mixtape for me of anything Aes has ever released. The concept is thin, the beats aren't cohesive, and the only throughline are the lyrical ... read more
I absolutely loved this project on first listen and frankly, the only thing keeping it from a 100 for me is What We On. To me that song sounds like JID chasing a Future or Drake sound that doesn't really click with his style or the mood of the rest of the album. Everything else on the album I love. The features all crush.
A super fun dance album from one of the most interesting characters in music
A musical portal to a liminal space full of great deals and greasy food
I recently got into The Wonder Years through Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties which these acoustic projects feel closer to sonically. I love this project. The harmonies, the deep and layered mix, the heartfelt throwback songwriting with the occasional self deprecating line about the era of Midwest emo artists getting older. It's excellent. Keep it up!
An excellent follow up to one of my favorite rock albums of the modern era. This band is just overflowing with musical potential. Long live Viagra Boys!
So we reach the end of our Aesop Rock Reviewathon just as Aes is gearing up for a new release with Black Hole Superette. Labor Days is really the one man. While it isn't my favorite album of his catalogue, it is the one where he just locked in. So much potential can be heard in the beats and rhymes present. Aes finally upgrades his production from the ultra stripped back beats on Earthworms, Appleseed, and Float, and with that change I feel we finally hear him level up as an artist. ... read more
This feels more like a first draft to me then Earthworms honestly. The production is so bare bones without the same charm as his independent debut. The raps are still excellent but given we are a step away from Labor Days, I wish this was a better transition between those two records. There are plenty of highlights, but this comes in near the bottom of his discography for me.
Woof, this was way harder to find then I was expecting. Thank you to the random reddit user who posted the google drive link so this doesn't end up as lost media. Really appreciate it!
Aes stands beside The Roots as one of my favorite hip hop acts of all time, and I think this album represents for Aes what Organix was for Quest and Tariq. It is sloppy, poorly mixed, incredibly rough, and clearly made by someone who has yet to really figure out what they are doing making music. Yet in both ... read more
My first time listening to this, I quite enjoyed it! A cool look at who Aes was before he found his sound. I love how grungy it is. Good shit!
This is my first Wonder Years rollout since becoming a fan after hearing the spectacular Aaron West album last year. This song slaps like crazy
Why on Earth someone uploaded this album of bad classic rock covers by someone who does not speak clear english and is just singing poorly over the original instrumentals that is so obviously NOT by The Roots is beyond me. Why they gave it an 82/100 makes even less sense.
