HANA - HANADRIEL

This album is insanely lazy and boring. Each song is essentially one beat with two vocal variations over it. Same tempo, same synths, same vocal style, like, HOW do you enjoy this little variety? The complete lack of risk-taking? Listen to the guest track she did with Grimes or Anamanaguchi - WAY more variation, WAY more energy and WAY more fun to listen to. This is nicely produced, but it is almost a complete failure at everything else. Sorry for being a jerk.

This sounds pretty much how you'd expect with that cover art. It sounds like the soundtrack for a classic 90s side-scrolling shoot-'em-up arcade game. Deeply compressed synth arpeggios with crushing reverb-drenched drums adorn every track, but there's more variety than you'd expect. The album opens with an up-tempo pulse that eventually winds its way down into a smoother, more relaxed vibe. The high compression is a bit of a marathon on the ol' eardrums and definitely leads to ear fatigue. It's ... read more

Torche - Admission

I did 69 (haha sex) because it just doesn't quite deserve that green rating. It's got some really meaty, catchy cuts like "Slide" and the title track, but it is also bogged down with songs that are repetitive and kill the flow. If my Miami bois would have fleshed out some more ideas (hooks, breakdowns, etc.) with the songs and trimmed the fat, then this would have been a grand-slam. Nonetheless, still a worthy album and I look forward to their next release.

This album is marred by odd production choices. The most immediate offender is the drums with a blown-out and distorted quality that conflicts with the rest of the instruments. The vocals are similarly unrefined and echo-y, lacking distinction and catchiness. The album succeeds with its quieter tracks, but even some of these feel like they're unfocused and rely too heavily on the quirks provided by unique effects choices. It's exhausting to listen to because the listener is constantly forced to ... read more

Mourn - Beneath the Beloved Axe
NR

It sounds like an Entombed cover band with a slight deathcore garnish.
