Was slightly disappointed in the overall album, despite loving a good number of tracks (especially the five track run from "I Hate the Way I Look Today" to "WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!", perfect stuff), I did feel that it could be a bit more "style over substance," and some of that style didn't entirely connect with me ("Winter Woman"). At points, “I quit” feels like a natural evolution of what Haim gave us in their last album. At others, it can be a disappointing step back, especially with some poorly chosen samples and frankly odd mixing. Still, as a Haim believer, I still found myself engaged with a good amount of tracks, even if the middle-chunk of this was a bit more forgettable than I would’ve hoped.
Dude, kind of liked this more than Chromakopia. Truly a great dance album without being “Dance” music, if that makes any sense? Definitely has the issue of some songs feeling half complete, but it also allows this to be one of the fastest, easiest listens of the year. One of my favorites from this year, despite not knowing this existed until a few days ago. Love how this ends as well.
One of those special albums that you find yourself revisiting for the joy of listening to the music, only to uncover more and more somber and meditative layers. I didn't know who McKinley Dixon was before hearing about this album, but now I'm eager to hear more!
This is one of the greatest albums of all time, but I keep thinking of the Esquire Theater throughout because they play this album before every movie, and I didn't realize until now.
