it's nice

파란노을 [Parannoul] - After the Magic

Magic !

Although it kind of blends together after the initial track, I find myself returning to this one again and again. Parannoul's ability to pull emotions through its shoegazy wall of sounds is stellar. This album stands out to me as a premier must-listen album from the Korean peninsula.

The Marías - Submarine

I really really dig this album. Feels like floating through space or dreaming.

Phenomenal writing and beautiful soundscapes. This thing packs a punch but its a punch that makes you move in slow motion, watching yourself falling in a third person view. Next thing you know, bam you're laying in bed - a dark room, you check your phone it's 3 am. Why are you so sad? I dunno. Maybe it all just didn't work out the way you wanted. Maybe it's this melancholy trumpet playing during "if only". ... read more

I got so much love here for this project. Kinda hoping for another go at it, perhaps maybe possibly. Mr Vernon?

Fred again.. - places to be

I GOT PLACES TO BE.
Honestly this would go so much harder if they kept in the drum fill the paak does in the video. Otherwise, incredibly FUN song.

Porter Robinson - Russian Roulette
83

While the lyrics are at times witty and introspective, the song itself has a very basic structure with a simple chord progression (which he makes a jab at near the end of the song - got a laugh out of me lol). It's definitely a good song, but I dunno, it feels a bit same-y to most pop songs, BUT with more wit and depth in the lyrics. Maybe that was the intention? To make an extremely pop-esque song to make commentary on his situation as an artist? who knooooows

Chappell Roan - The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess

This is such a fun jam. This album is incredible pop music in the best way. This is sassy, bold, and energetic. What's not to love?

Bring Me The Horizon - POST HUMAN: NeX GEn

When I was a teenager, I really didn't enjoy this band's music that much. A lot of the people I didn't vibe with were into this kind of music also. I'm happy to report nothing has changed and this shit is cringe as fuck.

Same formulaic song structure. Same cadence. Same self-deprecating lyrics.
Also, "get me low like a basement" come on man that's so bad.

Big Blood - First Aid Kit

This album is a really great listen. I love love the lead singer's voice, especially on the closer "Weird Road pt. 1". The call and response on that song is so *chef's kiss*. Haunting in parts, upbeat in others, this album is a multifaceted toolkit of groundbreaking low-key punk music. AND this album cover goes insane. Look at that. Look at it closely. I was studying it for ~30 mins straight. Incredible piece of art. Some songs on here go on a bit too long, but it's not criminally ... read more

Re-visiting this album has brought me back, man. As a kid on the internet in the early 2000s, it was hard to NOT hear this album on any goofy flashplayer video someone uploaded to a sh*tty animation they made. And it was rad as heck. I grew up on these songs. Re-visiting years later, yeah this was an incredibly groundbreaking album that has withstood the test of time. The lesser-known tracks on here are stellar, also! It's a good day to listen to discovery. 94 !

Clairo - Sexy to Someone

Love love love

Billie Eilish - HIT ME HARD AND SOFT

While the general mood of the album stays consistent, that consistency can reveal a lack of material in the back half of the album. While I enjoyed songs such as "Birds of a Feather" and "Chihiro" a lot, I had a hard time finding any substance elsewhere. Like a lot of releases this year, this album meshes into itself - leaving a blurry picture of which song is which near the end. This album in particular has so many switch-ups mid-song that you lose track of which song is ... read more

Do NOT call this man, especially after 8pm.
I really liked this one. Definitely the rap album of the year for me at the moment. The production was so clean, the flow was on point. Really loved everything about it. Nothing really bad to say except it gets a bit mellow and wandering a bit, but thankfully it doesn't drag on like some other albums this year did. Definitely check out "Étouffée" and "Radio"!! But give it a listen from front to back. I think that's ... read more

Knocked Loose - You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To
NR

I'm not the best with this kind of genre, so I will omit a score, as I don't feel like it's in my wheelhouse to be reviewing something like this.
This album has such a flow to it, it is hard to parse out when one song ends and another begins. In a good way. The huge, brutal sounds are overwhelmingly loud. It hits you like a wall from first track to last. In contrast to some other metalcore albums, this one has some incredible musicality to it. It think that's something often missing from ... read more

Chief Keef - Almighty So 2

It's really good when it's good and then it drags on a bit too long. A lot of fun tracks with some funny/stupid ass bars.
For example:
"I start wearin' yellow diamonds, it'll look likе I peed myself"
"And I'm smoking on that musty call me arm pit, man"

A lot of the songs have some nice piano medleys the the background or some synths overlaying, making the whole cohesion sound... cohesive. I guess what I'm trying to say is the producer went crazy and I would give a lot of ... read more

Charles Lloyd - The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow

I'm not going to act like I know jazz. I just know music generally and this album is very impressive. I really loved "Lift Every voice and sing". Give that track a listen, if anything.

Childish Gambino - Atavista
81

I remember listening to the original "03.15.20" in the basement of my friend's place right when the pandemic was really hitting. The original was neat and had some good ideas, but the long drawn out intros and outros were so fluffy and cumbersome, it made re-listening a difficult ordeal. I'm so glad that this version is out because it really gives some great songs a chance to shine. "To be Hunted", previously "19.10", was my favorite off the original album. I love ... read more
