glass beach - plastic death
91

This is by far and away one of the best albums of the year so far. I have never listened to glass beach but my friend told me I should check it out and damn I'm glad I did. The album is a treat, really. The creativity and expertise of their sound on here is on point.

I will go back to get a full review at the end of the year probably but sheesh I love this.
I can't really say which songs are the best and worst because they are all incredible, and I mean that lol.

Ariana Grande - eternal sunshine
59

Does she only make breakup songs? idk I have never really listened to her and I have time to kill.

But for real, I was not expecting much from the album, as I am not a #popmusic kind of person, but sheesh this thing is double chrome polished, c l e a n (too clean). The general sentiment is nice, but the song structure, lyrics, and general design is really really really safe and boring. I was writing notes while listening to each track but found myself writing "boring" on each one. Oh ... read more

Mk.gee - Two Star & The Dream Police

In 2022, I obsessed over Dijon's "absolutely" project I saw him and the boys open for Bon Iver (which was the best concert I have been able to experience). The combo of a great opener into a band at their creative high is just a beautiful thing. Fast forward to now, I find out that this kid released his own album only a month ago? I have listened to this thing about 2 times through and holy shit man this is beautiful.

This is soulful, experimental, atmospheric, and so much much ... read more

Quadeca - SCRAPYARD

At its best I find this thing to be extremely creative, blending a ton of genres into a beautiful tapestry of art and culture. At worst, this shit sounds like an overcooked cringe-fest. Maybe I need to marinate in it a bit more, but that's the impression I get after a few listens. My issue with the album is that there is so much that he is attempting to do here it all comes out as a mess.

I really enjoyed "TEXAS BLUE" and "GUIDE DOG". I felt like those were the most ... read more

Bleachers - Bleachers

Its okay!

I like some of it. It falls off near the end and gets a bit slow. I like slow but idk it felt pretty same-ey toward the back half. It's not bad tho.

Jacob Collier - Djesse (Vol. 4)
50

I have listened to a few songs by Jacob before so I thought eh I have time to kill, might as well.

Ouch what the hell was this. It's so busy. Like waaaaaaay too busy. Even though it's busy it feels too uhhh Choir-core? Like the vocals feel so focused on harmonizing and sounding buttery smooth the whole time. It's actually painful how chrome polished they tried to make it. American idol content. Yeouch.

Okay and the lyrics are insufferably corny. There were way too many people on this ... read more

MIKE & Tony Seltzer - Pinball

Pretty good but I don't think it's for me.

Some creative direction here and there but ultimately doesn't stand out that much.

Fun album! punk is sick. It didn't stand out enough for me, but what is here is decent!

Best songs are:
-I got heaven
-nothing like
-ok ok ok ok

No real "bad" songs, just some generic or short songs that hadn't been fleshed out.

Everything Everything - Mountainhead
80

The boys are back! It feels like it hadn't been too long either.

Of course we are back with the most obscure lyrics and electronic indie rock. I feel like they leaned even more into the pop/synthpop genre with this one though. This thing has a good direction that it sticks to throughout the album, it feels very cohesive; in contrast to the previous album, I think this a welcomed change. While I am not the hugest synthpop fan out there, this one still had quite a few tracks I enjoyed.

Faye Webster - Underdressed at the Symphony

I feel like this album has a looooot of potential but then decides to take a chorus and just repeat the same thing over and over and over and over. It's so strange because I really enjoyed a lot of the songs but caught myself thinking, "wait, this song is still going?". Specifically, the first song hits you with it right away. That thing is 6:36! but really it could have been 4:00 or even less. This happens again on "lifetime" and "wanna quit all the time". Then ... read more

ScHoolboy Q - BLUE LIPS

I really really enjoy the beats and instrumentals on this thing but goddam do the lyrics and bars have nothing on top of nothing. Every time I was vibing with the music he would come in with some derivative, corny ass bars. It just annoyed me. Like I said, the mix and music was so good though so it really saves the album itself. I won't say it's all bad bars across the board, but after an hour I'm just left annoyed at the lost potential.

The Last Dinner Party - Prelude to Ecstasy

Off rip, this thing feels really creative. It is a bit theatrical with its approach, almost like some showtunes (for example the song "Caesar on a TV Screen"). Although I am a big hater of musicals/showtunes this is more tasteful by a wide margin.

The main themes are pulling out a lot of emotion as it hits on gender, sex, femininity, masculinity, and roles prescribed to us by society.

I really enjoyed:

MGMT - Loss of Life
75

5th album for the iconic duo MGMT. I like it.
Didn't woW me like little dark age did. It's fun. It's an easy listen. Almost sleepy-like. Reminds me of the beatles really lol.

The first few listens had me thinking this album is probably incredible for someone that is really high.

After a while I realized I probably won't come back to this album anytime soon. Nothing against it, it just feels like some of the songs meld together.

Best songs:
Nothing to Declare - cozy song with a nice flow, ... read more

Brittany Howard - What Now
86

First run through thoughts are: this thing slaps. I love it so much.

Edit: This album reminds me of change, uncertainty, and building confidence in that tumultuous time. Often times Brittany is talking from her own perspective as she doesn't want to be like this or act like the way she does, but she can't help but feel this way. Relatable. This is usually over dancey beats and incredible melodies that had stuck with me for weeks. I would wake up and have these psychedelic grooves ... read more

Not gonna lie and say there is nothing here, but god damn what is here is poopie doo doo butt for the most part. If I ever have to listen to HOODRAT again I might scream over it just to drown out the noise.
Messy ass mixing along with kanye lyrics at their worst.
Also I'm tired of the whole "yooo this sample is from ____!" but the sample is just there for that surprise and doesn't add anything of value. cool bro you listen to music, so does everyone else.
