The first four tracks are unbelievably good with a real sense that whatever Neil is talking about, its important and he is putting his whole soul into it. The rest of the album lacks that quality for me. The sensitive production throughout the whole album does bring an ease of listen to the whole thing making the less "calling" tracks for me still worth a listen just to hear more of the soulful sounds
87 -> 78 production is still great but i have way less tolerance for vocal performance.
It feels like the same great song 11 times in a row. The only consistent problem in the album is the forced vocals. A lot of the time you can tell he is forcing the stilted and shaky vocal performance. This forced performance can make the songs feel less authentic and can really take me out of songs.
I love Beth gibbons vocals on this but the beats vary in quality for me. Need to re-listen
No ordinary love is impressive, Sade took a minimal sound and made it into the most sprawling pop songs I've heard. I do have a major complaint. The drum needs to be brought down in the mix. Every time I try to listen to another instrument with more focus it loudly takes me out of it.
