My Dad has this album on CD and I was a starved teenager looking for any music for me to listen to. I knew Smoke on the Water, Black Night and Highway Star. This is cheesy ass 80’s tunes but hey it still hits. Funny seeing the disparity between critic and user reviews.
listened to Pet Sounds in full for the first time in years, I still listen to The Beach Boys albums, but thought I’d burnt out on Pet Sounds and wanted to avoid overplaying it I suppose. I’ll come to grips with how important this is to me in my own time.
I don’t know why I never registered that this is some real 80’s synth pop retroism like M83 records of the time, I probably prefer Carly Rae Jepsen. This is enjoyable nonetheless.
Totally decent takes on contemporary (of its time) pop songs that have been Andy Williams balladified.
Look everyone, he's pedal stooling Australian Music again. Unreal post-punk record, just listen to it.
People forget that you don’t need to listen to Kanye when Kid Charlemagne is this good.
One of my favourites, I really got into the concept of song cycles and Days of Futures Passed is up there with XTC’s Skylarking. Good on them for writing their own songs and interspersing them with orchestral suites instead of doing rock covers or classical works. Necessary listening.
My new barber kept name checking Dragon during the cut, he showed me Still In Love With You which I thought sounded like a Nilsson tune - I think today it’s used in a commercial here.
I drastically underestimated Dragon, today they’re functionally a covers band who plays the more recognisable tunes and that’s it. O Zambezi carries over their pop tenancies with some mild funk in the title track, believe it or not their first few records are progressive rock. “Are You Old ... read more
On this listen I learned Femme Fatale is basically a bedroom pop song no kidding.
Listened to on the way to work, you could have fooled me into thinking it was a 90’s-00’s slacker rock record, feels like Built to Spill or Modest Mouse. The accordion is so natural.
Bought the CD recently and ripped it for my MP3 player. One of the best songs ever written, the longer mix is also good (honestly just pack in a 72 minute version). The Bob Sinclair remix ain’t bad either.
Some beautiful songs here, some Captain Beefheart - all on a 6 string with vocal… occasionally but rarely with accompaniment. I haven’t listened to much folk and I tend to be a production guy.
Good starting point for any newcomers, you could base on any song’s direction what album to prioritise easily… which I think is the point of any good compilation.
I have a soft spot for anything Brian Wilson and Beach Boys so, this tracks to me as a fine release - members of The Wondermints fill his band, and at moments it feels close to landing. However, the disjunct mix of Brian and Gershwin make a mix that shouldn’t work together, I think it picks up around ‘S Wonderful.
Good collection of The Cars tunes, ranging from their more guitar heavy power pop to their 80’s synth-y output. Its all New Wave.
Pleasing Post Britpop album, starts real hot then mellows out a little. Well formed layering, beautiful tenor vocals.
